Ryan Reynolds Shares Insights at TIME100 Summit
Ryan Reynolds, well-known for his role in the Deadpool franchise, recently attended the 2025 TIME100 Summit held in New York City. During this event, he opened up about various aspects of his career and personal life outside of his Hollywood endeavors.
During a conversation moderated by TIME correspondent Eliana Dockterman, Reynolds reflected on his early work, specifically mentioning his 2011 film Green Lantern. The actor candidly described it as “not the most successful movie” in his career. However, he mentioned a delightful twist: his two-year-old son adores it. “It’s my son’s favorite movie,” he shared, expressing pride in his child’s tastes.
Reynolds and his wife, Blake Lively, are parents to four children: James, 10, Inez, 8, Betty, 5, and Olin, 2. Their family life adds a personal dimension to his professional discussions, highlighting how parenthood influences his perspective on creative projects.
The star also reminisced about meeting Lively on the set of Green Lantern in 2010. The pair initially developed a friendship while working together, which Reynolds believes laid a solid foundation for their relationship. Reflecting on their early dating days, he recalled an awkward double date where both were seeing other people but felt an undeniable connection—something he described as “fireworks.”
Married since 2012, the couple has enjoyed a dynamic relationship shaped by mutual respect and shared experiences, including their time on the film.
During the summit, Reynolds elaborated on the valuable lessons he garnered from his experience with Green Lantern. He expressed that many insights are often framed as if they were understood at the time; however, he only realized their significance later. “I internalized these ideas, but I couldn’t have articulated it then,” he said. He noted a crucial lesson about creativity—one that emphasizes the importance of constraints: “Too much money, too much time, wrecks creativity. It just murders it.”
He went on to assert that limitations can serve as powerful catalysts for creativity. Reynolds recounted how, during the production, he saw significant funds funneled into special effects, often at the expense of character-driven storytelling. He remembered suggesting simpler scene ideas focusing on dialogue, which were dismissed in favor of “spectacle.” This experience shaped his guiding principle: “Character over spectacle,” which continues to influence his work and vision today.
The insights gained from Green Lantern ultimately inspired Reynolds to create his own production and marketing company, Maximum Effort, further demonstrating how past experiences can lead to new ventures and philosophies in the entertainment industry.
