Sadie Sink Returns to Broadway with John Proctor Is the Villain

Sadie Sink is making waves once again on Broadway, this time in the compelling play John Proctor Is the Villain. Reflecting on her earlier performances during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, she acknowledged a significant contrast in her craft. During that time, she and her siblings created “living room” adaptations of various musicals for their family, a nostalgic period that she humorously recalls in her show bio. One such performance was her portrayal of Grizabella in a home rendition of the beloved musical Cats, which she described as both “spellbinding and distressing.”

In a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Sink elaborated on her experiences, including her hectic schedule while juggling rehearsals for Mamma Mia! alongside filming for Season 3 of Stranger Things. She recounted, “I would wrap up a day using the Starcourt Mall set and then dash home for what my brother would jokingly announce as ‘rehearsal in 10 minutes.’ Our focus was on ‘Honey, Honey!’ and it was quite the whirlwind.”

During her interview, Sink expressed her excitement about the influx of young theatergoers attending Broadway shows, especially productions like John Proctor Is the Villain. She noted, “We had an incredible student matinee where 750 high school students attended. Many of them experienced their first-ever Broadway show, and their engagement throughout was inspiring.”

John Proctor Is the Villain is currently in previews at the Booth Theatre, with its official opening night scheduled for Monday, April 14. The narrative focuses on five young women whose lives become a battleground for pop music, optimism, and frustration as they grapple with their high school, their community in Georgia, and the ingrained narratives they’ve been taught. As they explore Arthur Miller’s The Crucible in class, they begin reassessing the concepts of heroism, villainy, and the consequences of either label. With sharp wit and emotional depth, this groundbreaking play boldly addresses the ongoing struggle for individuals to assert their narratives in a society still rooted in outdated beliefs.

Known for her portrayal of Max Mayfield in the acclaimed Netflix series Stranger Things, which is set to release its fifth and final season later this year, Sadie Sink has also lent her talents to a variety of projects, including Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, the Fear Street trilogy, and Taylor Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film. Sink made her Broadway debut in the classic musical Annie back in 2012.
