Sadie Sink’s Broadway Debut Shines in “John Proctor Is the Villain”

On April 14, Broadway celebrated the official opening of John Proctor Is the Villain, featuring Sadie Sink, who was supported by her renowned friends from Stranger Things.

The event took place at the Booth Theatre in New York City, where Sink’s co-stars Natalia Dyer, Maya Hawke, Gaten Matarazzo, and Finn Wolfhard were part of the audience, bringing star power to the opening night.

Red carpet images captured the moment as they made their glamorous entrance.

In addition to the young actors, numerous notable personalities were present, including F. Murray Abraham, Will Brill, Jennifer Damiano, Richard Kind, Marisa Tomei, and Constance Wu among others.

Before the performance, Sink, 22, expressed her enthusiasm for the play, underscoring the importance of its themes. “Kimberly’s writing is so brilliant and truly captures teenagers in an authentic light, tackling uncomfortable subjects with honesty,” she commented, reflecting her pride in the production and its relevant message.

John Proctor Is the Villain marks a significant milestone for playwright Kimberly Belflower, who makes her Broadway debut with this production, expertly directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor. The play is set in a Georgia high school, centering around students grappling with issues of young love and social scandals while studying Arthur Miller’s classic, The Crucible. It invites the audience to reevaluate the traditional hero archetype represented by John Proctor.

In this production, Sink stars as Shelby Holcomb, leading a talented cast that includes Nihar Duvvuri as Mason Adams, Tony winner Gabriel Ebert as Carter Smith, and Molly Griggs as Bailey Gallagher, among others. Notably, this is Sink’s first time as a lead in a Broadway play, following her earlier appearances in the revival of Annie and as an alternate in The Audience.

Sink’s rise to fame can largely be attributed to her role as Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, which greatly increased her visibility and led to additional projects, including acclaimed films like The Whale and Taylor Swift’s short film, All Too Well.

Reflecting on her time with Stranger Things, Sink shared the emotional difficulty of concluding her journey with the series during an appearance on The Tonight Show. “It was really hard, really difficult to say goodbye… we grew up on it,” she noted, highlighting the shared experiences of both the cast and its audience.

As she reminisced about her time on set, Sink humorously mentioned collecting memorabilia, including Max’s skateboard and other keepsakes from her character, revealing a sentimental attachment to her role.

Tickets for John Proctor Is the Villain are currently available, inviting audiences to experience this thought-provoking production firsthand.
