Rahul Dholakia to Direct an Epic Netflix Film on India’s First General Elections
Saif Ali Khan was recently featured in the film Devara: Part 1.
Director Rahul Dholakia is gearing up for the debut of his latest film, Agni, while also venturing into a new high-budget project for Netflix that focuses on the inaugural general elections in India. The film is expected to feature prominent actors Saif Ali Khan, Deepak Dobriyal, and Pratik Gandhi in leading roles. Nikkhil Advani, known for his production work on the critically acclaimed Freedom At Midnight for Sony LIV, is set to produce this ambitious venture under his production house, Emmay Entertainment.
According to a report from PeepingMoon, this Netflix Original will depict the historical narrative of India’s First General Election, which was held from October 25, 1951, to February 21, 1952. This event marked a significant milestone in the establishment of democratic governance in India post-independence. The process of conducting elections presented formidable challenges, as it was a new experience for both the government and the populace.
“To facilitate the election process, the Election Commission launched an extensive door-to-door initiative to register eligible voters, while also ensuring that political parties were assigned distinct symbols to simplify the voting choices for the electorate. Creative strategies were implemented to enhance voter accessibility, particularly in remote regions. Ultimately, approximately 45.7% of the eligible voters participated, casting ballots for 1,874 candidates representing 53 parties competing for 489 parliamentary seats. The Indian National Congress emerged with a resounding victory, securing 364 seats and paving the way for Jawaharlal Nehru’s role as the first Prime Minister of democratic India,” the report elaborates.
Further details reveal that Saif Ali Khan is set to portray Sukumar Sen, the first Chief Election Commissioner of India. Under Sen’s leadership, the Election Commission effectively organized and managed India’s first two general elections (1951-52 and 1957) with exceptional accuracy and integrity.
“Sen, an esteemed officer of the Indian Civil Services (ICS) and a skilled mathematician, meticulously strategized and executed the electoral process alongside two Regional Election Commissioners and each state’s Chief Election Officer. Drawing from their experiences managing elections during the British rule, Sen and his dedicated team of ICS officers crafted one of the most remarkable electoral successes in history,” the source adds.
In terms of recent work, Saif Ali Khan was seen in Devara: Part 1, which marked his debut in Telugu cinema alongside actress Janhvi Kapoor, released in September. Upcoming projects include Siddharth Anand’s action thriller, Jewel Thief, in which he is expected to undertake a fast-paced rescue operation, against a perilous timeframe. Reports suggest that Jaideep Ahlawat will portray the film’s antagonist, and the movie is anticipated to have a direct release on OTT platforms.
