Saif Ali Khan Set to Portray Sukumar Sen, India’s First Chief Election Commissioner in Upcoming Film

Saif Ali Khan is currently preparing for his latest action drama, “Jewel Thief,” which includes co-stars Jaideep Ahalwat and Nikita Dutta and is set to premiere on a digital platform on April 25. Concurrently, reports indicate that Khan has begun filming for a new period drama directed by Rahul Dholakia, where he is expected to take on the role of Sukumar Sen, the first Chief Election Commissioner of India.

According to Mid-day, the as-yet-untitled project began filming on April 20 at the Grand Hotel in Ballard Estate. Khan is anticipated to join the production by the end of this week. This project marks Khan’s return to filming following a recent incident. Sources reveal that the set featured over 200 extras, contributing to a dynamic crowd scene involving Pratik Gandhi and Deepak Dobriyal. The production team plans to shoot at various locations across the city in the coming weeks, with a goal to complete a significant portion of the film by late May. After finishing promotions for “Jewel Thief,” Khan will focus on this new venture.

Previous reports from PeepingMoon have stated that the film will explore the historical context of India’s First General Election, which took place from October 25, 1951, to February 21, 1952. This election marked a pivotal milestone in the establishment of democratic governance in post-independence India—an endeavor that posed considerable challenges due to the lack of experience with electoral processes, both from the government’s and the public’s perspectives.

To address the complexities of conducting elections, the Election Commission initiated an extensive door-to-door campaign to register eligible voters. They also introduced symbols for political parties to simplify candidate recognition for voters, employing innovative strategies to ensure access to the voting process, even in rural and remote areas. Ultimately, around 45.7% of the eligible electorate participated, casting votes for 1,874 candidates across 53 parties competing for 489 seats. The Indian National Congress emerged victorious, securing 364 seats, which led to Jawaharlal Nehru’s appointment as the first democratically elected Prime Minister of India.

Regarding “Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins,” the narrative follows a skilled thief hired by a powerful crime lord to acquire a rare diamond known as The African Red Sun. In this film, Khan is set to face off against Jaideep Ahlawat. Directed by Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal, “Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins” is slated to stream on Netflix starting April 25, 2025. The film is produced by Siddharth and Mamta Anand’s Marflix Pictures and also features Nikita Dutta and Kunal Kapoor.
