AR Rahman Hospitalized for Dehydration; Estranged Wife Requests Support
Renowned Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman was recently admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai due to severe dehydration but has since been discharged following a comprehensive medical evaluation.
Following his hospitalization, Saira Banu, Rahman’s estranged wife, issued a statement through her lawyer, expressing her hopes for his swift recovery. Notably, she emphasized in an audio note that they are not legally divorced, thus preferring not to be referred to as his ‘ex-wife’.
In a voice note shared on March 16, Banu began with a greeting, “Assalamualaikum,” and expressed her well-wishes for Rahman. She revealed that he experienced chest pain and underwent angiography but is now recovering. Banu requested that everyone refrain from labeling her as ‘ex-wife’, highlighting their continued marital status despite their separation, which originated from her health struggles over the past two years.
She stated, “We are still husband and wife, it’s just that we are separated… please don’t stress him too much, and take care of him. Thank you, Allah Hafiz.”
AR Rahman and Saira Banu tied the knot in 1995 and recently announced their decision to separate after 29 years of marriage. Together, they share three children: Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.
Rahman’s hospitalization followed his return from an overseas trip, where he reported feeling discomfort along with neck pain. A medical bulletin from Apollo Hospitals confirmed his admission due to dehydration, stating, “Mr AR Rahman visited Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road today morning with dehydration symptoms and got discharged after routine check-up.” This report was confirmed by Dr. RK Venkatasalam, the hospital’s Director of Medical Services.
The news of Rahman’s health comes shortly after Saira Banu’s own medical emergency, during which she underwent surgery. She expressed gratitude to her supporters and Rahman in a recent statement delivered through her legal representative, Vandana Shah.
