Salford Red Devils Face Ongoing Financial Turmoil
Salford Red Devils have reported that both players and staff have once again not received their salaries on time for the second consecutive month, highlighting the financial difficulties plaguing the Betfred Super League club.
In a recent statement, the club expressed frustration toward their ownership situation, stating, “As many will already know, our payroll wasn’t delivered this morning as scheduled, despite assurances.”
The club has been under salary cap restrictions for a significant portion of the season, a result of its financial struggles, which has limited head coach Paul Rowley’s selection options for matchday squads.
Current Team Challenges
Adding to the club’s woes is a growing injury list. Coach Rowley indicated that for their upcoming match against reigning champions Wigan, he would have just 15 players available, which includes the newly acquired loan signing, George Hill.
Salford managed to secure their first win of the league season against Huddersfield Giants on March 20, following a challenging start that saw them lose their initial four matches. However, recent departures of key players, such as Marc Sneyd, Brad Singleton, and Tim Lafai, have further complicated Rowley’s strategic options as the financial crisis continues.
Ownership Developments
A new consortium led by Swiss banker Dario Berta had initially raised hopes for stability after acquiring the club in the summer. Nonetheless, since that takeover, delays in salary payments have plagued the organization, with the new leadership frequently citing various reasons for these setbacks.
Player and Staff Commitment
The club’s official statement noted the adverse implications the current situation has for everyone involved with Salford Red Devils. It emphasized that, despite these challenges, players and staff have maintained professionalism and dedication to keeping the club competitive both on and off the field.
As the organization awaits similar commitment from its leadership to ensure stability, the support received from fans and partners during this turbulent period has been a significant source of encouragement. The club stated, “The unwavering support of our fans and partners during this challenging time is both humbling and inspiring; it makes all the difference to players and staff.”
Looking ahead, Salford is set to take on Wigan Warriors on Sunday at 3 PM, followed by a match against Catalans Dragons on April 4 at 7 PM. Their next home encounter will be against Leeds Rhinos on April 10.
Sky Sports will continue to broadcast all Super League matches live this season, featuring two exclusive matches in each round and additional coverage available on Sky Sports+ or via the red button.
