Exploring the Salmon Sperm Facial: A Unique Beauty Treatment
Shall we start with the intriguing name? The “salmon sperm” facial is renowned for its hydrating, plumping, and overall rejuvenating effects due to its key ingredient—tiny fragments of DNA extracted from salmon sperm, commonly known as polynucleotides. When injected via a needle or a cannula, this treatment offers notable hydration benefits, leading to visibly dewy skin.
This innovative treatment gained notoriety largely through celebrity endorsements, with Kim Kardashian being among the first to introduce it to the beauty mainstream (she is also associated with popularizing high-end procedures like full-body MRI scans and vampire facials). Recently, stars like Jennifer Aniston and Charli XCX have also embraced this method. However, it was a casual remark from Vogue’s global beauty and wellness director, Jessica Diner, that truly piqued my interest. Diner expressed her strong preference for salmon sperm above all other treatments, encouraging me to delve deeper into this unique offering.
While the world of Botox and fillers has never particularly appealed to me, this treatment seemed like a more natural introduction to aesthetic enhancements. Unlike synthetic alternatives, it involves injecting something derived from nature into the skin. When Jess offered to connect me with Clinic Dr Dray in South Kensington in exchange for a firsthand account, I was intrigued enough to explore this route, despite any prior reservations about such treatments.
During my initial consultation, Dr. Benjamin—a charming and knowledgeable practitioner—explained, “The salmon DNA treatment is suitable for all skin types and ideal for those seeking to enhance their skin’s overall quality.” He noted its effectiveness for individuals with dry or dehydrated skin, as well as those affected by sun damage or uneven pigmentation. Additionally, he mentioned that it may provide relief for chronic skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
I expressed my concerns about the potential for bruising with polynucleotide injections, but Dr. Benjamin assured me that their technique—using a cannula at just four target points on the face rather than multiple small injections—minimizes the risk and cuts down on recovery time. After applying a numbing cream to my face for about 15 minutes, Dr. Benjamin proceeded with the injections: one beneath each eye, on the upper cheekbone, and two points on either side of my mouth.
