Samara Joy: A Journey of Style and Self-Expression
Samara Joy and her stylist, Amanda Murray, embarked on an exciting journey to create a unique look for the upcoming Grammys. Through a series of thoughtful text exchanges, Joy expressed her desire to explore her personal style. “I appreciate the open dialogue. It’s an area I’m trying to improve on as well—being vocal about my preferences,” Joy shared. When she laid eyes on a dark leafy green dress adorned with Ling’s signature aluminum pins, she was instantly captivated. “I identify as a modest person, but I recognize that highlighting my curves is essential for a striking appearance. It’s gratifying to find a way to express myself through fashion that maintains elegance without revealing too much,” she explained. The fitting session with Ling and her team was not only productive but also exhilarating, marking a significant entry into the fashion world for Joy.
Murray aims to create a memorable fashion experience for Joy, who represents the underrepresented voices of fuller-figured young Black women. She notes that the fashion industry often targets a narrow spectrum of beauty ideals, leaving many out. “While race isn’t the sole focus, it’s important to acknowledge that some designers shy away from dressing Black women. They may feature Black models during shows, but their inclusion often stops there,” Murray remarked.
She continues, “Samara, as a Black woman with a fuller figure, does not conform to their outdated idealizations, but that should not lead to her exclusion from fashion.” Murray is a firm believer in the transformative power of fashion to uplift individuals. “I wanted Samara to feel the joy of wearing a dress that fits her beautifully and makes her feel recognized and cherished,” she added.
“The beauty of this outfit lies in its simplicity, yet it conveys a strong message,” Joy highlighted. “I believe this year’s Grammys will represent that sentiment. Over these past few years, I’ve been so busy on tour that I haven’t fully embraced the chance to showcase my best self.” Due to the demands of touring, her outfits have often been practical, focusing on ease of packing and minimal upkeep. However, Joy has been enamored by Ling’s talent for creating pieces that are both subtle and striking, pushing her fashion boundaries. “I’ve never worn anything like this, and I’m excited to surprise people. I want them to think, ‘Wow, she really stepped up her game,’” Joy expressed.
Joy’s fashion evolution mirrors her personal growth. “In my early days of performing, I struggled with how to dress for gigs. I was reserved, and that reflected in my fashion choices—I often thrifted. I even disliked going into fitting rooms! I gravitated towards items that were convenient and fit well, hoping they would work out,” she reflected. Now, Joy feels empowered to share her developing aesthetic: “It’s about blending elegance with youth; being playful while also modest and mature.”
As she looks ahead to her international tour, a sold-out Carnegie Hall show set for April, and additional appearances on the red carpet, Joy aspires to continue showcasing her authentic self through fashion. With plans for ongoing collaboration with Murray and designs from innovative, forward-thinking creators, she is committed to remaining true to herself. “I aim to consistently present my genuine self. I refuse to allow external perceptions of fashion to influence me,” Joy stated. “I anticipate having more fun, more fittings, exploring new styles, and discovering more about myself through fashion.”
