What you need to know
Recent reports indicate that certain models of Galaxy phones are facing problems with paint peeling, attributed primarily to the use of third-party chargers with inadequate grounding, according to Samsung. Numerous users have taken to platforms like Reddit to highlight this issue, particularly concerning the Galaxy Z Fold 6, where the phone’s paint appears to be deteriorating, exposing the metal surface beneath. Additionally, the use of specific electronic muscle stimulation (EMS) devices alongside these phones has been noted to potentially exacerbate the paint peeling issue, suggesting complications in power flow management.
Samsung has stated that the paint peeling issues arise when high-speed third-party chargers, lacking proper grounding, are used, leading to what they describe as leakage current. This leakage can adversely affect the anodic coating, causing minor paint damage.
Essentially, the improper interaction of non-brand chargers with the phone’s paint protective coating undermines its adhesive properties, resulting in peeling. Samsung asserts that this phenomenon mainly occurs with low-quality chargers and emphasizes that chargers adhering to the Qi standard should not pose significant issues.
However, Samsung’s reference to the Qi standard is somewhat perplexing since concerns about paint peeling are predominantly related to traditional wired charging practices.
As a remedial measure, Samsung recommends that users adopt a specific charging orientation to mitigate the likelihood of damage. Furthermore, they firmly encourage users to rely on authentic Samsung chargers, which may add to the overall cost burden for consumers purchasing these high-end devices.
Interestingly, Samsung has also revealed that the use of an EMS massager can lead to parallel paint issues, which indicates that the problems may stem from the device’s handling of different power flow configurations.
Despite these concerns, Samsung reassures consumers that reputable third-party chargers conforming to industry guidelines are generally considered safe. However, the company issues a cautionary note regarding counterfeit or substandard chargers, which could potentially harm the device through electrical leakage and corrosion of its metal components.
This situation may raise questions concerning Samsung’s decision to exclude a charger from the packaging of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and similar models, inadvertently steering consumers towards less expensive third-party charging solutions.
