Samsung has collaborated with GSMA to enhance connectivity across its Galaxy-branded smartphones. Devices running Android 15 with the One UI 7 skin will now come with the voice over LTE (VoLTE) feature activated by default in specified regions. Previously, users had to manually enable VoLTE on compatible devices, so this update aims to make VoLTE accessibility broader. The implementation of VoLTE is said to improve call quality and connectivity on 4G and 5G networks, although availability may differ based on network providers or geographic locations.

VoLTE Support Comes Standard on Samsung Galaxy Phones with One UI 7

On Wednesday, GSMA announced a partnership with Samsung, enabling Galaxy smartphones operating on Android 15 or newer to have VoLTE functionality turned on by default. This change is anticipated to enhance call quality for users connected to 4G or 5G networks.

Most recent Galaxy smartphone models, including the Galaxy S25 series, are equipped with VoLTE capabilities. However, users previously needed to enable the feature manually. Given that many telecom providers are shifting away from 2G and 3G networks in favor of more advanced connections, this strategic move to activate VoLTE by default is significant.

The GSMA explained that Samsung employs its Network Settings Exchange (NSX) and Interoperability Testing services to facilitate the automatic activation of VoLTE. The partnership asserts that these devices use “operator-defined IMS settings via NSX or default to GSMA Profile #4 when necessary.”

According to GSMA, the NSX serves as a centralized platform that standardizes the distribution of mobile network settings from operators to device manufacturers globally. It allows both mobile network operators (MNOs) and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) to upload, manage, and distribute their latest network settings efficiently.

Through the GSMA NSX, network operators can share IMS-specific configurations with manufacturers, ensuring compatibility and service advantages. Moreover, devices can be pre-configured based on the network settings provided by operators.

The Interoperability Testing service from GSMA also provides “a suite of validation tools” to ensure that “operator-device compatibility for VoLTE is in place before launching commercially.” Samsung has aligned its testing protocols with GSMA’s standard VoLTE testing guidelines, showcasing the necessity for collaboration within the industry.
