Samsung Unveils the Galaxy Z Fold6 Special Edition

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line has faced criticism for being stagnant, with incremental updates that have allowed competing Chinese foldables to gain market momentum. However, the recently announced Galaxy Z Fold6 Special Edition aims to rectify these concerns with significant enhancements, including larger displays, a slimmer design, and a powerful 200MP camera.

What’s New with the Galaxy Z Fold6 Special Edition?

One of the most notable features is its expanded cover and main displays. The device features a 6.5-inch LTPO AMOLED 2X cover screen, an upgrade from the previous 6.3-inch panel, boasting a more user-friendly 21:9 aspect ratio that resembles that of traditional smartphones.

The internal main display has also seen an increase—now at 8 inches with a 10:9 aspect ratio. Both screens support a 120Hz refresh rate, while the cover display is reinforced with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for enhanced durability. However, despite rumors of a transition to Ultra Flexible Glass (UFG), Samsung has not confirmed any such advancements, instead continuing with the existing Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) technology.

Enhanced Dimensions and Weight

The Special Edition model has been designed to be more streamlined, measuring just 4.9 mm when opened and 10.6 mm when closed. While its overall weight has been reduced to 236 grams—3 grams lighter than its predecessor—this has come at the cost of S Pen support, which has been omitted in this edition.

Camera Advancements

In terms of photography, the Z Fold6 Special Edition introduces a striking upgrade with a 200MP main camera featuring Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), significantly surpassing the 50MP main lens found on the standard Z Fold6. The ultrawide camera now includes autofocus capabilities, marking a significant enhancement, while the telephoto lens remains a 10MP unit with 3x optical zoom. The device also retains the dual selfie camera setup, which includes a 10MP camera on the cover and a 4MP under-display camera on the main screen.

Power and Connectivity

Under the hood, the Z Fold6 Special Edition is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 optimized for Galaxy, and comes with a sole configuration of 16GB of RAM alongside 512GB of internal storage. Additionally, the device offers improved connectivity options with the inclusion of Wi-Fi 7, a feature that has yet to be available in the standard Z Fold6.

The software experience is managed by One UI 6.1.1 based on Android 14, complete with Galaxy AI assistance. Samsung has committed to providing seven years of software support, ensuring longevity for this flagship device.

Battery capacity remains consistent at 4,400mAh, the same as the Z Fold6, with charging options including 25W wired and 15W wireless charging.

Availability and Pricing

The Z Fold6 Special Edition is offered in a singular Black Shadow color variant and is priced at KRW 2,789,600, which translates to approximately $2,028 or €1,868. Currently, the device is exclusive to the South Korean market, with speculation suggesting it may soon launch in China, potentially under the Galaxy W25 branding, though it is unlikely to be released in other regions.
