Samsung Enhances SmartThings with Key Updates

Samsung has unveiled significant advancements to its SmartThings platform, including the integration of Samsung Health and expanded support for various device types through the adoption of the Matter 1.4 protocol.

For users with a Galaxy Watch (Model 4 or later) or the new Galaxy Ring, sleep tracking features are now available. SmartThings can leverage these wearable devices to initiate automated routines based on sleep patterns.

For instance, when users fall asleep, SmartThings can automatically turn off lights, mute the television, and lower the room temperature. Upon waking, the system can draw back the curtains and switch on the television. The integration with Samsung TV Plus on 2025 television models allows for seamless transitions, such as tuning into morning news during your wake-up routine.

Additionally, the integration of Samsung Health extends its capabilities. Each morning, users will receive a sleep environment report via the Galaxy Now Briefing. This report includes insights on temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, and light intensity, provided the appropriate sensors are connected within the SmartThings network.

The Matter 1.4 protocol broadens device compatibility significantly, encompassing a variety of devices including water heaters, heat pumps, solar chargers, batteries, and more. Details on the Matter 1.4 update can be found here.

With this update, SmartThings-connected speakers also gain a new broadcasting functionality. Users can now record short voice messages that will play through selected speakers, making it easy to communicate across different rooms within the home or even while outside.

In 2023, Samsung launched Calm Onboarding for its own devices, and this new update extends that feature to third-party SmartThings devices available on Samsung.com. Calm Onboarding simplifies the setup process for new devices, providing users with purchase and delivery updates, as well as a step-by-step setup guide once the product arrives.

Currently, Calm Onboarding for third-party devices is rolling out first in South Korea, with plans for expansion to other regions soon, including countries that have an active IoT marketplace. The onboarding feature for Samsung devices is already accessible in 14 nations, such as Korea, the US, several European nations, Australia, and Brazil.
