Samsung has made a significant announcement regarding its latest microSD card offerings, now featuring a remarkable 1TB storage capacity. This development marks a notable shift for the company, as its competitors have been providing 1TB microSD cards for some time. With the introduction of the Pro Plus and Evo Select models, Samsung aims to establish itself among the leading providers in the microSD card market.

The new cards incorporate Samsung’s eighth-generation V-NAND (V8) technology, which enhances both performance and storage capabilities. These features are particularly relevant for professionals, such as photographers and content creators, who require reliable and high-performing storage solutions.

Samsung 1TB SSDs

While Samsung has previously released 1TB models, these were limited to SSDs and portable SSDs. The company suggests that a 1TB capacity is sufficient for storing around 400,000 4K UHD images or more than 45 console games, highlighting its suitability for both work and entertainment.

From a technical standpoint, the Pro Plus and Evo Select cards are equipped to meet the demands of their users. The Pro Plus model boasts impressive transfer speeds of up to 180 MB/s and adheres to UHS Speed Grade 3 standards, making it ideal for capturing high-quality 4K UHD video. Additionally, its V30 video class rating ensures rapid file transfers.

The Evo Select variant offers a slightly lower transfer rate of up to 160 MB/s, positioning it as a more general-purpose card suitable for everyday tasks rather than exclusively professional applications.

Both models feature a new controller built with Samsung’s advanced 28-nanometer process technology, which represents a significant improvement over the previous generation’s 55nm technology.

Durability is a critical consideration for users who frequently transport storage media, as accidents can lead to severe data loss. Samsung has rigorously tested these microSD cards under extreme conditions, including exposure to water, high temperatures, X-rays, and strong magnetic fields, to ensure their resilience.

Get Your Game On

Among the target users for these microSD cards are gamers, particularly those using consoles like the Nintendo Switch. With the capability to hold up to 45 games (assuming an average size of 20GB each), a 1TB microSD card presents gamers with substantial storage for their titles.

The Pro Plus and Evo Select cards are also designed for compatibility with a wide range of devices, including Android smartphones, tablets, laptops, and various gaming consoles. This versatility makes them appealing options for a diverse group of consumers.

In addition to the 1TB models, Samsung offers various storage capacities in both the Pro Plus and Evo Select lines, with sizes including 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, and the Evo Select providing an entry-level 64GB option. Pricing for these cards ranges from $24.99 to $153.99 for the Pro Plus, and $12.99 to $131.99 for the Evo Select.

While these higher pricing tiers for the 1TB versions may place them above some competitors—such as the Silicon Power A1 and Lexar Play microSD cards—Samsung’s reputation for reliability and innovative technology might justify the additional cost for many users. Moreover, Samsung backs these products with a five-year warranty, further enhancing their appeal.
