Samsung Unveils Enhanced 1TB microSD Cards for Diverse Applications

The microSD card may not be a staple in today’s smartphones, but it remains vital for various devices such as drones, action cameras, and handheld gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch. With the ever-increasing demand for storage capacity and speed, Samsung has launched new Pro Plus and Evo Plus microSD cards with capacities reaching up to 1TB, catering to users who require substantial data storage.

The average size of a Nintendo Switch game hovers around 10GB, enabling the new 1TB cards to potentially hold approximately 90 titles. However, it’s worth noting that some games, like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition, can take up nearly 40GB, emphasizing the need for substantial storage options.

The new Samsung Pro Plus microSD card

These newly introduced microSD cards incorporate an advanced 28nm controller, an upgrade from the older 55nm versions. This enhancement not only improves power efficiency but also features Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) error correction code, significantly bolstering the card’s reliability for extensive write-and-erase cycles. Furthermore, the upgraded performance is credited to the adoption of 8th generation V-NAND technology.

The Samsung Pro Plus models deliver impressive speed capabilities, with sequential read speeds of up to 180MB/s and sequential write speeds reaching 130MB/s. The Evo Plus cards, while a bit slower, still offer commendable performance at up to 160MB/s read and 120MB/s write. Both card lines have received A2 ratings for application storage and are classified as U3 and V30, making them suitable for general file storage and 4K video recording.

The new Samsung Evo Plus microSD card

The cards are available in a range of sizes including 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Notably, the Evo Plus line features a 64GB option, though it offers reduced performance at only 60MB/s for read speeds and 20MB/s for writing, along with A1/U1/V10 ratings. All variants come with a 10-year limited warranty and are engineered to endure various environmental stressors, including water, high temperatures, X-rays, and magnetic fields.

The new microSD cards are now available worldwide, with the Pro Plus models starting at $25 for the 128GB version and peaking at $154 for the 1TB option. The Evo Plus cards present a more budget-friendly alternative, with the 1TB model priced at $132, while the 64GB variant is available for $13, albeit at lower speeds.
