Samsung has recently submitted a patent to the World Intellectual Property Organization, revealing plans for an innovative smartphone design that features a quad-fold capability. The illustrations included in the patent application depict a device comprising four screen panels that are interconnected by multiple hinges, enabling them to fold inwards. A single seamless glass cover is intended to overlay these panels, giving the phone an uninterrupted, crease-free appearance.
This advancement marks a significant step forward in foldable technology as Samsung progresses towards its first tri-fold device, known as the Galaxy G-fold. The latest patent indicates the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what foldable phones can do.
On March 27, Samsung filed the patent titled “Electronic device including a bendable display,” which was brought to light by Sammy Guru. This filing represents a forward-thinking approach to mobile device design, particularly in the realm of foldable technology.
Accompanying the patent are several graphics that illustrate the potential configurations of the quad-fold device, showing various angles in both its folded and unfolded states. The design emphasizes multiple hinges that allow for a compact form when closed, while enabling an expansive tablet-like display upon opening.
The functionality of this quad-fold device appears to mirror that of existing tri-fold models, though it distinguishes itself by enabling each panel to fold inward rather than just a single panel, as seen in some tri-fold variations. If the design employs one continuous display across all hinges, users can enjoy a large screen for productivity or entertainment when unfolded, while benefiting from a sleek, portable size when folded.
Despite being only a patent at this stage, it hints at a substantial foundation being laid by Samsung for future product launches. At the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC), the company showcased prototypes of multi-fold screens, introducing the Flex G and Flex S designs, which appear to align closely with what we might expect from their upcoming tri-fold and multi-fold devices. The event also featured a unique claw-shaped foldable that can close vertically, leaving a small active screen portion visible.
Currently, Huawei’s Mate XT dominates the tri-fold market; however, there are indications that Samsung aims to enter this competitive space with its anticipated “Galaxy G Fold,” alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Reports suggest that this device could begin mass production imminently, with a launch expected in July.
As Samsung continues to reveal its ambitious plans for multi-fold devices, the transformation of these patents into real-world products is keenly anticipated by both consumers and industry observers alike.
