In recent years, Latin American gangs have increasingly established their presence in the United States, contributing to a rise in violence and drug-related crime as local communities wrestle with the challenges of illegal immigration and complex trafficking networks. To shed light on this disturbing trend, Fox News Digital consulted with Michael Brown, a former Senior Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the current global director of counter-narcotics technology at Rigaku Analytical Devices.
Brown described the landscape of criminal organizations as a sophisticated network, emphasizing that these groups, often referred to as cartels, are not merely local street gangs but are highly organized entities exerting significant control over drug trafficking operations and engaging in violent conflicts over territory.
The Role of Cartels
According to Brown, Mexican cartels, particularly the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), are pivotal in shaping the drug trade in the U.S. He stated that these organizations play a dominant role in funneling substantial quantities of narcotics such as fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine into American markets. “The Sinaloa Cartel likely holds the leading position in narcotics trafficking, with CJNG closely behind,” he explained.
Brown noted that these cartels supply 85-90% of all illicit drugs entering the United States. He added that a network of affiliated organizations in major U.S. cities distributes these drugs, collaborating with established organized crime syndicates, such as those rooted in Italian or Albanian affiliations.
While Mexico remains the primary source and transit point for illicit drugs, Brown highlighted that countries like Brazil and Colombia also play crucial roles in the global drug distribution chain. Brazil, in particular, serves as a strategic hub for transporting narcotics from Colombia and Peru to various international markets, including the U.S., Europe, and Australia.
Sanctuary Cities and Gang Violence
Brown pointed to the influence of sanctuary cities as a factor that intensifies gang violence, providing a conducive environment for criminal enterprises to thrive. He explained that in cities like New York and Chicago, financial assistance programs for housing and other basic needs could inadvertently attract gang members seeking to exploit these resources. “A gang member can easily latch on to that system,” he remarked.
He further indicated that cartels have adapted their recruitment strategies, employing grassroots efforts to attract migrants into their ranks. Brown expressed concern that certain policies in sanctuary cities may unintentionally empower these organizations, contributing to an environment where crimes often go unreported, particularly among communities wary of law enforcement.
Economic pressures in African American and Latino communities might drive some individuals toward gang involvement, as they may see it as a pathway to quick financial gain and status. Brown criticized the depiction of gangster culture in mainstream media, particularly in music genres like rap, for glamorizing the lifestyle. He noted, “It’s crucial to consider why this portrayal resonates so deeply within certain communities, with aspirations tied to rapid wealth and recognition.”
Notable Gangs and Cartels
MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) – Originating in California, MS-13 has expanded its operations throughout Latin America, becoming notorious for extreme violence, including mass murders and brutal assaults.
18th Street Gang (Barrio 18) – Like MS-13, this gang began in the U.S. and has made significant inroads into Central America, engaging in violent conflicts with rival groups.
Sinaloa Cartel – Renowned as one of the most formidable criminal organizations in the region, the Sinaloa Cartel controls significant drug trafficking routes and is known for its violent methods.
Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) – This Mexican cartel has gained notoriety for its willingness to use extreme violence, including the execution of law enforcement personnel and rival gang members.
Los Zetas – Infamous for their brutal tactics, Los Zetas have become synonymous with terror in the drug trade, engaging in horrific acts such as massacres and torture.
Mara 18 Revolucionaria – Similar to MS-13, this gang operates in the same regions and is involved in fierce territorial battles as well as various criminal activities, including human trafficking.
