Sandeep Reddy Vanga Discusses Violence, Censorship, and Artistic Freedom in Filmmaking

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Perspective on Aggression in Cinematic Storytelling

Renowned filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga, known for his impactful works such as Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh, and Animal, continues to generate discussion across India regarding his unique approach to storytelling. With a focus on raw, often controversial themes, Vanga has ignited fervent debates on subjects like violence, democracy, and the role of censorship in cinema.

Having directed only three films to date—Arjun Reddy in 2017, the 2019 Bollywood remake Kabir Singh, and his latest, Animal, released in 2023—Vanga has quickly made a name for himself as a divisive figure in the Indian film industry. His films are frequently scrutinized for their depiction of violence and complex gender dynamics, raising questions about the intersection of artistic expression and moral responsibility.

In an interview with Komal Nahta on the show Game Changers, Vanga shared thought-provoking insights into the nature of aggression and its portrayal in his films. When queried about the identification with the violent behaviors showcased by his characters, Vanga articulated a complex view on aggression being constrained within a democratic framework. He remarked, “I cannot do that in a democracy. Otherwise, obviously; because the person opposite us would also do the same. If it were the Stone Age, he would do something, and you would react accordingly, right?” This perspective suggests that societal norms play a significant role in suppressing innate human instincts, a theme often mirrored in his cinematic narratives.

Despite the graphic violence often featured in his films, Vanga surprisingly advocated for a nuanced approach to censorship. He acknowledged that while most of his work made it through the viewing process generally unaltered, he believes that censorship should be overseen by experienced industry professionals rather than bureaucratic regulators lacking understanding of cinematic language. “Censorship should be controlled by senior, retired directors, not by people who don’t understand filmmaking. It would be easier to reason with them because an ex-filmmaker would understand more,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of considering the filmmaker’s intent rather than isolating specific scenes.

Vanga also proposed that censorship should embrace a more adaptable framework, advocating for a rating system similar to those used in Hollywood, which classifies content rather than imposing outright bans. He commented, “There should be censorship; otherwise, people would shoot anything and show it to audiences.” His ideas reflect a desire for the industry to evolve towards a structured classification system, which could provide clearer guidance for audiences while still allowing for creative freedom.

On the topic of film ratings, Vanga acknowledged their significant influence on the commercial success of movies. He revealed that while he accepted the adult rating for Animal, he questioned the appropriateness of the same rating for Kabir Singh. “We didn’t contest it because Arjun Reddy had also been given an ‘A’. Though I was upset then, the censor officer told me not to worry and even predicted that the movie would be a success,” he remarked, suggesting that understanding the rating system can impact a film’s reception and profitability.

Through his candid reflections, Sandeep Reddy Vanga opens a vital conversation about the balance between creative expression and societal responsibility, challenging both filmmakers and audiences to reconsider the implications of violence and censorship in cinema.
