Sania Feagin’s Journey to the WNBA: A New Chapter in LA
Just a few days have passed since Sania Feagin found herself drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks, and she’s already in the midst of preparing for her big move to the West Coast. “Everything’s happening so quickly,” remarked Feagin, a senior at the University of South Carolina. After flying across the country and managing logistics back home, she is set to leave for LA with excitement and anticipation.
The 22-year-old forward has experienced a whirlwind of events, with little time to pause for reflection or celebration. She did manage to enjoy a cozy family gathering, filled with music and good food. “I’m excited to be close to a beach, to be out there in Hollywood,” Feagin expressed, noting that her transition from her Southern roots in Georgia and South Carolina to the vibrant life of Southern California is one she welcomes. Adding a personal touch to her transition is Hendrix, her new puppy, who has already become a source of joy (and mischief) during this hectic time. “I know that I’m about to be alone for a good little while, and I feel like having a dog will help me get outside,” she shared, hopeful about the companionship.
Despite being unknowing of her future destination at the time of selecting her draft outfit, Feagin turned heads on the orange carpet with her elegant white silk gown and glamorous ringlet hairstyle, evoking the charm of Old Hollywood. Her sense of style may set the tone for what fans can anticipate during her appearances this season. “I’m super excited about that part,” she stated, revealing her passion for fashion.
In an exclusive interview, Feagin reflected on her journey, including her farewells to her teammates and the meaningful experiences that led her to this moment.
Now that you’ve had a couple of days to process since the draft, how are you feeling?
I’m feeling fantastic. It’s incredible to know that I have this opportunity ahead of me.
As you’ve been making this transition, was it hard to say goodbye to anyone?
It was tough to part ways with my teammates. We’ve shared so many memories together, and knowing I’ll be in a new environment means I will have to adapt and connect with new people. It’s a bit intimidating, but also exciting.
What about your college coach? It seems like you have a close relationship.
Yes, we do have a strong bond. I spoke with her just before leaving Columbia; she encouraged me to be myself and to shine in this new chapter. Her support means the world to me.
You might have transferred to another program early on for more playing time but chose to stay with your team instead. What influenced that decision?
I decided to remain because I believed I could learn and develop alongside talented players like Aliyah Boston, Kamilla Cardoso, and Lele Grissett. This atmosphere allowed me to grow in various facets of the game and as an individual, which ultimately helped me reach the WNBA.
How have you evolved as a person in the last four years?
My growth has been significant both on and off the court. I’ve become more vocal and aware of how essential communication is in basketball. Learning from my teammates has also enhanced my leadership skills, enabling me to connect better with others.
I saw Magic Johnson welcomed you to the Sparks on social media. Have you heard from other players or staff in LA?
Not yet, but I did see Magic’s welcome and found it exciting. I might need to figure out how to use Twitter more effectively to engage with them!
It’s intriguing that both your parents played basketball in college. What has it been like for them to see you reach this milestone?
It has been a dream for them as well. I truly appreciate all the sacrifices they made to support my journey.
What advice have they offered you as you prepare for this new phase?
They always encourage me to stay true to myself, maintain confidence, and recognize what is right or wrong. They are my backbone, supporting me through every challenge. Knowing they are there for me makes all the difference.
