Zeenat Aman and Sanjay Khan’s 1978 Marriage Concluded Amid Abuse Allegations

The union between Zeenat Aman and Sanjay Khan in 1978 was fraught with controversy from its inception. Despite Sanjay’s pre-existing marriage, their partnership quickly became marred by allegations of abuse, culminating in a separation after just one year. Reports indicated that an argument escalated to the point where Sanjay allegedly struck Zeenat, causing injury to her left eye. However, Sanjay has publicly denied these accusations.
In a recent interview, Sanjay Khan spoke out regarding the allegations, mentioning that he had opportunities to return to cinema following the release of his film “Abdullah” but chose not to due to the emotional turmoil caused by the accusations. He stated, “After Abdullah’s release, I received numerous offers, yet I declined. I went into self-imposed exile for four years, traumatized by the biased portrayal of the situation. It felt like a calculated public relations assault on my character. I was deeply affected by the misrepresentation. The claims—including an assertion that I was to blame for her eye damage—were completely unfounded.”
Sanjay maintained that during the early 1980s, from 1981 to 1984, Zeenat appeared in numerous films without any eye complications. He suggested the eventual appearance of a squint was due to hereditary factors rather than any action on his part. “Throughout 1981 to 1984, her eyes were fine. Later in life, she developed a slight squint, which runs in her family. This narrative became distorted with false accusations that I was responsible. I never laid a hand on her. Such accusations are reprehensible. I’ve always respected my co-stars and have never encountered any trouble with anyone,” he asserted.
The impact of these allegations on Sanjay’s mental health was significant. He reflected on the aftermath, stating, “The rumors haunted me. The day following the alleged incident, Zeenat appeared fine. Yet, the press escalated the matter. Notably, neither Raj Kapoor nor Dev Anand reached out to inquire about the situation. Raj Kapoor was someone I held in high regard, and I had a good relationship with Dev Anand as well. If they believed I had harmed her, they would have contacted me. Their silence speaks volumes. I have never intended to harm anyone in my life and it’s disheartening to be unjustly vilified.”
