Sanjay Mishra called Fawad Khan’s return to Bollywood an “international issue.”
Fawad Khan is set to make his much-anticipated return to Bollywood with the film “Abir Gulaal.”
In a recent dialogue, veteran actor Sanjay Mishra addressed the broader implications of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan’s return to Indian cinema, labeling it as an ‘international issue.’ Mishra expressed, “If we face opposition in Hollywood, what avenues remain open? I grew up listening to legendary artists like Mehdi Hassan; should I have avoided that? The reality is we cannot satisfy everyone.”
Khan’s return has reignited discussions surrounding the involvement of Pakistani artists in Bollywood, sparking varying opinions across both political and entertainment landscapes regarding the ongoing cultural exchange between India and Pakistan.
Recently, actress Ameesha Patel supported Khan, emphasizing India’s tradition of celebrating talent from all corners of the globe. Patel reflected, “My admiration for Fawad Khan has not wavered. We welcome all artists and musicians—this is the essence of India. Art knows no boundaries; therefore, international artists deserve a platform, regardless of their origins. Whether they’re painters, musicians, or filmmakers, every artist has a place here.”
Contrasting Patel’s views, veteran filmmaker and IFTDA President Ashoke Pandit has publicly opposed Khan’s casting. He warned that Khan’s return might provoke a considerable response from the public and criticized the Indian film industry for collaborating with Pakistani talents amidst an unofficial standoff on such partnerships.
Pandit remarked, “This situation reflects an insensitivity towards our national interests and an apparent disregard for its significance. Some seem to think these matters do not affect them, but I question the belief that art transcends borders. Consider this: in light of all the attacks on our nation, where have we seen any Pakistani artist publicly denounce these violent acts? There has been a noticeable absence of public condemnation from their side concerning the assaults on our soldiers and civilians.”
He continued, “If the stance is one of being above national sentiment, then ramifications are inevitable. I firmly believe that this film will face widespread public protests, reflecting the sentiments of the nation.”
The release of the movie’s teaser on April 1 attracted immediate criticism, prompting Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to raise concerns about its public screening in Maharashtra.
Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, “Abir Gulaal” stars Vaani Kapoor alongside Fawad Khan and is set to hit theaters on May 9, 2025.
