Sarah Brightman to Star in Sunset Boulevard in Singapore

Sarah Brightman is set to reprise her iconic role as Norma Desmond in the much-anticipated production of Sunset Boulevard, which will debut in Singapore this February. In a recent discussion, she opened up about her process for embodying the character and the significance of bringing the show to a new audience in Asia.

Brightman revealed, “By probably about mid-day I start becoming Norma. It’s just a thought process for me; by the time I walk on that stage, I am that person. I’m fully focused into that life, that time.” This deep immersion highlights the dedication she brings to the stage, ensuring that her performances resonate with authenticity.

The singer and actress also expressed her excitement about the international engagement of the production. “It’s always fun to work in other countries, but it’s a different culture, and they’ll be seeing different things in it, so I do enjoy that experience always,” she noted, emphasizing the unique perspectives that diverse audiences bring to the theater.

Brightman’s return to this role follows her recent performances at the Sydney Opera House, and now she is ready to captivate Singaporean audiences at The Sands Theatre in Marina Bay Sands. This production promises a strictly limited engagement, adding to the allure for theatergoers.

Sunset Boulevard is based on the classic Paramount Pictures film, and the new staging features breathtaking sets and costumes that evoke the opulent era of Hollywood’s Golden Age. The score is laden with memorable songs such as ‘With One Look’, ‘The Perfect Year’, and the powerful anthem ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye’.

The musical’s composition is by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with the book and lyrics crafted by Don Black and Christopher Hampton. This fresh adaptation is directed by Paul Warwick Griffin, featuring set and costume designs by Morgan Large. The choreography is by Ashley Wallen, complemented by musical supervision from Kristen Blodgette.

The narrative of Sunset Boulevard captures a poignant tale of lost fame and unfulfilled aspirations. Norma Desmond, a once-celebrated silent film star, finds herself longing for a resurgence in Hollywood, grappling with her past as the film industry evolves into the world of “talkies.” Her chance encounter with struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis sparks a tumultuous and passionate relationship, which ultimately leads to unexpected and tragic outcomes.

Performances in Singapore are set to commence on February 7, promising a mesmerizing experience for all attendees.
