Levi Anderson Set to Make His NLL Debut with Saskatchewan Rush

Levi Anderson’s journey into the National Lacrosse League (NLL) is a homecoming of sorts for the Calgary native, who has been captivated by the intense rivalry between the Calgary Roughnecks and the Saskatchewan Rush since childhood. Now, Anderson is preparing to step into the league he has long admired.

“Honestly, it’s a dream come true,” Anderson expressed. “Ever since I was 11 or 12, I wanted to play in the NLL. It feels surreal, especially being so close to home.”

As he approaches the start of the upcoming season, Anderson is gearing up for his much-anticipated debut with the Rush. After enjoying a successful stint in the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) with the Maryland Whipsnakes, where he recorded 13 points in seven games, he is now back in the box lacrosse scene, eager to showcase his skills.

Transitioning from the grass of the PLL back to the fast-paced indoor format has presented some challenges for Anderson. “The first week was a little rough,” he admitted. “I had to adjust to the pocket and the quicker touches. Moving from cleats to shoes took some getting used to, but it’s been good—I’m adapting well to the pace.”

Anderson, standing at six feet four inches and weighing 215 pounds, was a highly sought prospect in the 2023 NLL Draft, where he was selected 12th overall. His physical presence and agility have already made an impression on his teammates.

Teammate Insights

Joining a talented forward lineup that features Robert Church, Austin Shanks, Clark Walter, Zach Manns, and captain Ryan Keenan, Anderson’s unique skill set has been a topic of discussion during training camp. “He’s a handful out there,” Keenan noted. “He’s an insane athlete and skilled. He asks the right questions, demonstrating a strong desire to learn. It’s been enjoyable playing alongside him.”

While primarily listed as a forward, co-head coach Jimmy Quinlan has indicated that Anderson may play a more defensive role early in the season, capitalizing on his athleticism in transition plays. “He’s like a Swiss Army knife,” Quinlan stated. “He can occupy space and eliminate opposition effectively. When he pushes up the floor, he creates opportunities on offense due to the space he draws.”

However, establishing himself in the NLL will require perseverance. As Anderson approaches his 26th birthday, he is aware of the competitive nature of the league. “I know I can be a threat,” he remarked, highlighting the high caliber of talent he will be facing. “It’s challenging for a first-year player, but I’m excited about the opportunity.”

The Rush will conclude their training camp this weekend before Anderson makes his NLL debut on the road against the Albany FireWolves on November 30. With his track record in both the PLL and NCAA at Saint Joseph’s University, fans at SaskTel Centre can expect an exciting display of talent and potential from the newcomer wearing number 88.
