The newly launched game Schedule 1 has swiftly garnered significant attention since its release on Steam in Early Access on March 24. However, amidst its rapid rise in popularity and continued player engagement, it has sparked controversy over one of its in-game achievements, which some community members have labeled as “incredibly racist.”
Despite still being in development, Schedule 1 has already rolled out its first content update, reflecting its ability to maintain a strong player base through its engaging gameplay. Players are drawn to the myriad activities available, from crafting items with unique effects to engaging in casino-style mini-games.
However, along with its success, the game faces challenges, including scrutiny over potential copyright issues. More recently, a specific achievement in the game has come under fire from players, leading to calls for its removal.
Concerns Raised Over “Racist” Achievement in Schedule 1
One player highlighted the troubling nature of the “Indian Dealer” achievement in a post on X, which involves selling a product to a customer and then swiftly pickpocketing it back. This particular achievement is unique in that it explicitly references a race, which has raised concerns about its appropriateness among players.
The player tagged the game’s creator, Tyler, expressing their discontent with the achievement, asserting that it perpetuates stereotypes by singling out a race. Describing the achievement as “incredibly racist,” they requested its removal to address these concerns.
Another user echoed similar sentiments, stating that the term “Indian Dealer” is reminiscent of the derogatory term “Indian Giver,” which is historically linked to negative stereotypes about Indigenous peoples. This individual elaborated on the harmful implications of such language, emphasizing that even unintentional references can uphold damaging views and narratives.
They highlighted the importance of recognizing the language used in gaming, noting, “This is the only achievement in Schedule 1 tied to racist language. We’re urging the developers to either remove or rename this achievement.”
As of now, the creator of Schedule 1 has not publicly responded to the criticisms surrounding the achievement. The community remains eager for an update on how the developers will address this matter.
