Winnipeg Jets Extend Win Streak to 10 Games With Overtime Victory Over San Jose Sharks
In a thrilling encounter on Monday night, the Winnipeg Jets managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, defeating the San Jose Sharks 2-1 in overtime. The crucial goal came from Mark Scheifele, who found the net after a rebound, solidifying the Jets’ impressive ten-game win streak.
Josh Morrissey initially tied the game with a goal just before the end of regulation, leading the Jets into a dramatic overtime. With this latest goal, Scheifele also claimed a significant milestone, marking the 329th of his career. This goal not only secured the victory for the Jets but also pushed him past Ilya Kovalchuk, making him the franchise’s all-time scorer.
The game was not without its moments of tension, especially in the first period. Around the 13-minute mark, tempers flared when Cole Perfetti was engaged in a battle for the puck. Following a whistle, a scuffle broke out, resulting in matching penalties for Nikolaj Ehlers and Jack Thompson for roughing.
The intensity ramped up shortly after, as Adam Lowry led a rush into the Sharks’ zone but lost his balance, colliding with goaltender Vitek Vanecek, granting San Jose a 4-on-3 power play opportunity that they capitalized on. With the scoreboard still reading 1-0 in favor of San Jose heading into the final frame, the pressure mounted on the Jets. Early in the third period, another power play opportunity for the Jets ended in frustration as they were again unable to score. Colin Miller nearly tied the game with a close shot that hit the post, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.
As the clock wound down, the Jets pulled Hellebuyck for an extra attacker. Just when it seemed the Sharks would hold on for the win, Morrissey delivered with a powerful slapshot that deflected off Mario Ferraro and into the net, igniting the home crowd and forcing overtime with just 25.9 seconds left on the clock.
Overtime saw the Jets dominate possession, culminating in a chance where Nikolaj Ehlers fired a shot that was saved by Vanecek, only for Scheifele to slide in and secure the game-winning rebound. This victory not only marked the tenth consecutive win for the Jets but also set a new franchise record, surpassing the previous streak from March 1985.
As the Jets prepare to hit the road, they will look to continue their remarkable form against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night, hoping to extend their winning streak further.
