Washington — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has decided to delay promotional events for his upcoming book due to rising security concerns stemming from criticism from Democratic constituents. This backlash follows his recent decision to support a bipartisan measure aimed at preventing a government shutdown.
“Senator Schumer’s book events are being rescheduled because of security concerns,” stated Risa Heller, Schumer’s spokesperson, on Monday.
The New York Democrat had planned several appearances this week across multiple locations, including Maryland, New York City, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, and California, to promote his book titled “Antisemitism in America: A Warning,” which releases on Tuesday.
This decision to postpone comes in light of expected protests at some events, a reaction to Schumer’s vote last week endorsing a temporary funding measure. This measure was crucial in preventing a government shutdown and required at least eight Democratic votes for a successful procedural advancement. Although he voted in favor of moving the bill forward, Schumer ultimately opposed its final passage, which did not need Democratic support.
“The Republican proposal is undoubtedly a poor choice,” Schumer remarked last week. “However, allowing Donald Trump to gain more influence through a government shutdown is an even worse alternative.”
