As 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of Innovators Magazine, we are excited to reflect on key moments from our journey throughout the year. Each month, we will share stories, podcasts, initiatives, and collaborations that have defined our path. In this installment, we revisit an event from 2017 when we co-hosted a St Andrew’s Day reception in the European Parliament. In the spirit of celebrating Scotland, recent Tartan Week festivities featured Alan Cumming, adding tartan flair to the streets of New York, highlighting the cultural significance of this vibrant celebration.

Innovators Magazine proudly partnered with the European Innovation Summit in Brussels this year, an event orchestrated by the Knowledge4Innovation (K4I) Forum within the European Parliament.
On November 30, Innovators Magazine, alongside K4I, hosted a St Andrew’s Day reception to mark the event’s closing ceremony. The ceremony was led by MEP Lambert van Nistelrooij, while Alyn Smith, another Member of the European Parliament, represented Scotland in the day’s celebrations.
Attendees, including influential figures from European politics and business, were treated to insights about Scotland’s aspirations to enhance Europe’s innovation landscape, all accompanied by the country’s renowned whisky. Additionally, Strathclyde University participated by presenting its Images of Research exhibition as part of the reception, emphasizing the university’s commitment to research and innovation.
Winston Churchill once remarked, “Of all the small nations of this earth, perhaps only the ancient Greeks surpass the Scots in their contribution to mankind.”
Professor Tim Bedford, Associate Principal for Research & Innovation at Strathclyde University, expressed enthusiasm about the exhibition: “We are delighted that the Images of Research tour is making its international debut at the European Innovation Summit. We hope that it provides delegates with an insight into the breadth of our research, its industrial and societal impact, and the creativity of our researchers.”
Voltaire’s words resonate: “We look to Scotland for all our ideas of civilization.”
Event organizers K4I collaborated with IncubatorEurope and Glowfly to introduce a new startup initiative this year—the EU Top 50 Millennial Startup Competition. In conjunction with K4I, Innovators Magazine created a special edition profile of the top 50 startups, which included an exclusive interview with ‘serial-explorer’ Bertrand Piccard. The Swiss innovator delivered a keynote address at the startup convention held on November 28 in the European Parliament Hemicycle.
