St Johnstone’s Valakari Reflects on Challenges and Optimism Ahead of Key Match
Since taking the helm in October of last year, St Johnstone manager Valakari has faced significant challenges. Despite the struggles, he maintains an outlook rich in positivity.
Valakari candidly acknowledged moments of self-doubt during tough times, stating, “Of course, when results aren’t favorable, everyone starts to question what we are doing.” Yet, he emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset within the team. “There’s no point in being negative, especially internally,” he added.
He shared, “I have felt frustration, but my confidence and belief in our direction remain intact. Although we haven’t always secured the results we’re after, that’s part of the league’s nature.”
Valakari stressed the necessity of finding joy in one’s work, explaining that despite inconsistent outcomes, he believes St Johnstone has made considerable strides during his tenure. “Our play style has evolved, showcasing a clearer identity, and we’ve become more pragmatic with our strategies,” he remarked.
Moreover, he noted, “Football is a process. You build upon your foundations, layer as needed, and work towards your goals. Positivity is vital; enjoying your work adds to a fulfilling career.” He believes that there should be more joy in football rather than dwelling on negativity.
Looking ahead to their upcoming match, St Johnstone enters as slight favorites against Livingston, a team currently positioned third in the Championship and on an impressive 11-game unbeaten run across all competitions.
Valakari highlighted Livingston’s recent successes, particularly their victory over Ross County in a previous cup encounter. “Their game plan was executed perfectly against Ross County. They capitalized on their opportunities and defended well,” he noted.
As Valakari further assessed Livingston’s strengths, he acknowledged their clear gameplay identity, stating, “They excel at applying pressure and will seek to exploit our mistakes with their experience and quality.”
However, he expressed confidence in his own squad, stating, “We are also in good form and possess a blend of youth and experience. Our younger players are learning from the veterans.”
Valakari also pointed out the significance of the upcoming semi-final at Hampden, adding, “Opportunities like this are rare in a player’s career, so it’s crucial that we approach it with a proactive mindset.” He concluded with an assurance that the team aims to remain focused and positive, stating, “We will approach the challenge ahead with a positive attitude while avoiding to get overwhelmed by the occasion.”
