SPFL’s Attempt at Restructuring Faces Challenges
The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has announced that there is “no reasonable prospect of achieving consensus” regarding potential changes to the structure of the Scottish Premiership. This statement follows a recent meeting held by the Competitions Working Group (CWG) to deliberate on league reconstruction.
Earlier reports from Sky Sports News indicated that a proposed 10-team top division was unlikely to garner enough support. Discussions about maintaining the existing 12-team format or considering alternative models, such as 14 or 16 teams, are still on the table, though no immediate alterations to the Premiership are planned.
Despite the stalemate regarding the top flight, there seems to be a collective interest in expanding the Scottish Championship, League One, and League Two. Each of these leagues currently consists of 10 teams, and there is a possibility that their sizes will increase, pending further discussions.
A recent statement from the SPFL noted, “The SPFL’s Competitions Working Group met on 29 April to discuss the possibility of league restructuring. It was agreed that there was no reasonable prospect of achieving consensus around a new format for the William Hill Premiership. However, there was broad agreement on potential changes to the William Hill Championship, League One, and League Two.” The organization plans to develop these proposals further and will engage in consultations with clubs and other stakeholders.
