Aamir Khan’s Mahabharat project may start this year.
Veteran screenwriter and filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s father, Vijayendra Prasad, has recently disclosed that Aamir Khan expressed interest in creating a film based on the Mahabharata. Despite this, no updates have surfaced from Khan regarding the longstanding project.
Aamir Khan’s ambition for the Mahabharata has been on the table for several years. Recently, he indicated that production may commence within this year. In an interview with PTI, Vijayendra Prasad recounted his previous discussions with Khan, stating, “Some time ago, he (Aamir) approached me with an idea to adapt the Mahabharata. I’m uncertain about what transpired afterward.” When asked if he would participate in a version of the Mahabharata directed by his son Rajamouli, Prasad emphasized, “His ultimate objective is to realize the Mahabharata.”
He also shared a memorable conversation he had with Rajamouli, reflecting on India’s rich narrative heritage. Prasad recalled, “One day, my son asked me, ‘Father, can you tell me which way India is rich?’ Just as I was pondering an answer, he remarked, ‘India is rich in stories.’ We possess the Mahabharata and Ramayana, which are invaluable treasures that we must explore further. This is our wealth.”
Aamir Khan is not the sole Bollywood figure to reach out to Vijayendra Prasad for his expertise. Last year, Salman Khan also consulted him regarding a potential sequel to Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Prasad noted a positive reception, sharing, “I met Salman last Eid, where I narrated a storyline to him, and he seemed intrigued. However, we shall see how things unfold.”
Concerning Aamir Khan’s Mahabharata, the actor expressed eagerness to initiate the project this year. He indicated to The Hollywood Reporter that the ambitious undertaking would likely be split into multiple parts, much like the Lord of the Rings series. Aamir acknowledged that securing final approval for the venture might take some time, given that the writing could span several years.
Additionally, Aamir has yet to confirm his role in the Mahabharata, explaining that casting decisions would hinge on the suitability of actors for their respective characters. “We’ll evaluate who should be cast based on appropriateness for each part,” he explained. He further commented on the scale of the project, suggesting he might not direct it himself due to its expansive nature. “I don’t believe the Mahabharata can be encapsulated in a single film; it will require multiple installments. I envision it on a grand scale,” he stated. Aamir hinted that it could potentially involve multiple directors, indicating, “It’s premature to specify, but we may need various directors.”
