Experience the Golden Eras of Transatlantic Cruising at Sea Containers London
Sea Containers London, located on the bustling South Bank, has recently introduced four new cabin suites, each drawing inspiration from a unique chapter of maritime history.
The new suites, available for reservations starting April 16, include the Edwardian Cabin Suite, Art Deco Cabin Suite, Mid-Century Cabin Suite, and Dynasty Cabin Suite. These accommodations are crafted by Jacu Strauss, the designer and creative director at Lore Group, which oversees the property.
“The allure of transatlantic travel has always fascinated me—those golden moments when the journey was as much about elegance as the destination,” Strauss remarked in an interview with Travel + Leisure. “This suite collection pays homage to four pivotal eras in 20th-century cruise liner history.”
Opened in 2014, this 354-room hotel was meticulously designed to evoke the essence of a 1920s transatlantic cruise liner, featuring luxurious elements such as gilt portholes in the bathrooms and lobby, alongside curved copper walls reminiscent of historic clipper ships. Guests can also enjoy spectacular views through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Thames.
Each new suite is a tribute to a particular design era: the Edwardian style of the early 20th century; the glamorous art deco aesthetic of the 1920s and 30s; the innovative mid-century modern appeal of the 1950s and 60s; and the bold opulence reminiscent of the 1980s Dynasty trends.
Strauss collaborated with vintage furniture curator Vinterior to find authentic design pieces for each suite. The Edwardian suite showcases a luxurious upholstered walnut armchair paired with a striking mahogany kidney-shaped desk. The Art Deco suite features a vintage 1930s sofa and an armchair, complemented by Swedish walnut bedside tables. The Mid-Century suite boasts a Danish powder blue sofa as well as a distinguished chair by Ludwig Mies Van De Rohe. Meanwhile, the Dynasty suite is adorned with a lucite glass coffee table and a Maralunga sofa, reimagined in sleek leather for that quintessential ‘80s opulence.
By partnering with Vinterior, Strauss not only diversified the design through sustainable practices but also imbued each suite with a distinct mood and personality, carefully selecting shapes, textures, and finishes to enhance the authenticity. “Every element has purpose beyond aesthetics, showcasing how design evolves over time,” he explained.
Each suite is also stocked with specially curated books by global publisher Phaidon and bottled cocktails inspired by each design period, crafted by the hotel’s acclaimed bar, Lyaness. Rather than merely offering a home away from home, these accommodations aim to transport guests on a luxurious imaginary cruise.
“Ultimately, I hope guests experience a sense of wonder as if they’ve entered a fantastical world for the duration of their stay,” Strauss added.
The new cabin suites at Sea Containers London start at a nightly rate of £1,100. Guests can secure their stay by visiting seacontainerslondon.com.
