In a significant development within the criminal sex-trafficking case involving Sean “Diddy” Combs, one of his defense attorneys has officially requested to withdraw from the proceedings, according to court documents.
Attorney Anthony Ricco filed a motion on Thursday indicating his desire to step back from his role as one of Combs’ six defense attorneys. While Ricco refrained from offering specific reasons for his decision, he emphasized his inability to continue effectively representing Combs.
“Under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs,” stated Ricco in an affidavit submitted to the federal court in Manhattan. “It is respectfully but regrettably requested that the court grant the relief requested.”
Ricco’s choice to withdraw followed discussions with Combs’ leading attorney, Marc Agnifilo. He clarified that his affidavit was intentionally concise to protect any sensitive information covered by attorney-client confidentiality.
The judge overseeing the case will need to approve Ricco’s motion for his withdrawal to be finalized. Ricco reassured the court that his exit would not impede the upcoming trial, set to commence on May 5, as Combs will remain supported by five other attorneys.
At 54 years old, Combs has pleaded not guilty to serious accusations claiming he coerced women into participating in drug-fueled sex acts. He has been held in custody without bail since his arrest in September. If found guilty of the most severe charges, he could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years, with the possibility of a life sentence.
Beyond the criminal proceedings, Combs is also contending with over 40 civil lawsuits filed by various individuals alleging they were drugged, sexually assaulted, or raped by him. These mounting legal challenges have further complicated the public image of the once-revered music producer.
As this high-profile case continues to develop, Ricco’s withdrawal introduces uncertainty regarding the defense strategy moving forward. Although Combs maintains a team of five attorneys, the loss of a defense lawyer at this crucial juncture may influence the approach taken during the trial.
