Sebastian Stan Critiques Trump Ahead of Election Day
Sebastian Stan, known for his role as Donald Trump in the film “The Apprentice,” shared pointed criticisms of the former president as the nation prepares for the upcoming Election Day.
In an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast, Stan urged voters to view “The Apprentice,” a film directed by Ali Abbasi that explores the complex relationship between a young Trump and his lawyer Roy Cohn during the 1970s and 80s. Stan’s call to action comes in light of Trump’s denouncement of the film, labeling it as “fake and classless,” which contributed to its difficulty in securing distribution. Stan emphasized that watching the film could provide insight into the reality depicted within it.
Stan stated, “You have the right to be curious and know what there is to know,” firmly believing that awareness of the film’s content is essential. He expressed concerns about a collective societal denial, suggesting that over the past few decades, comprehensive documentation exists regarding the events and relationships portrayed on screen. “What’s really so controversial about this film?” he asked. “Everything that’s in this film has been documented.”
Further elaborating, Stan highlighted a significant challenge in contemporary discourse: the difficulty in discerning truth. “There are people that are going to say, ‘We don’t know what the truth is anymore.’ That’s the problem! [Trump] has muddled it up so much,” he said, urging those interested to seek the truth amidst the noise. “If you really care, you can still find it.”
Stan also expressed the unique impact of film in communicating truths, noting that it often evokes emotional responses that facts may not convey. “You hear facts, we all hear information, but you don’t experience it,” he elaborated. He believes that the immersive nature of film allows viewers to engage with the narrative on a deeper level. “At the end of this film, you’re left asking, ‘Do you trust this person?’” he said. He ultimately characterized Trump as a “paranoid, scared little man” motivated by self-interest rather than public concern.
Reflecting on his own journey, Stan, who immigrated from Romania to the United States at the age of 12, described “The Apprentice” as a representation of the American dream. He shared how his perceptions of Trump evolved from initial skepticism to a larger contemplation of the American dream and its implications. “This is the promised land, this is the land of the free, this is where you can become someone,” he recalled his mother saying, underscoring the sacrifices made for their American experience. “I’ve always been in love with this idea. I am sort of an example of the American dream. I’ve lucked out.”
However, Stan cautioned that the pursuit of the American dream can lead to negative consequences, highlighting Trump’s narrative as an example of this darker reality. He posed critical questions about the price of ambition and what one may sacrifice in that pursuit. “The movie was asking the question, ‘What is the cost?’” he explained, suggesting that singular focus can lead individuals to lose sight of their humanity.
