Sen. Ron Johnson Weighs In on Trump’s New Tariffs

Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) recently described President Trump’s proposed reciprocal tariffs as a “bold and risky” strategy, following the president’s announcement of these tariffs that target numerous foreign nations.

In an interview with “NewsNation Now,” Johnson remarked on the complexity of tariffs, stating, “Tariffs are a double-edged sword.” He noted that the president holds a strong conviction about the necessity of these measures, a stance he has maintained for a considerable time.

Trump revealed his latest tariff initiative on what he refers to as “Liberation Day,” establishing tariffs that will be set at roughly 50% of the taxes imposed by foreign countries on American goods. For nations where specific reciprocal tariffs have not been articulated, a baseline tariff of 10% has been instituted.

While Trump envisions these tariffs ushering in “the golden age of America,” many economists have expressed concerns about the potential for a looming recession as a result of this aggressive trade policy.

There is a growing divide among lawmakers regarding the tariffs. Some, including Senators Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), sided with Democrats in a recent vote aimed at repealing Trump’s 25% tariffs on imports from Canada.

In contrast, Johnson voiced his opposition to the repeal, suggesting that Democrats are seeking to undermine Trump’s efforts. “I want to see the president succeed,” he affirmed.

Since Trump’s announcement, Johnson reported witnessing commitments to substantial investments—potentially amounting to trillions—in the U.S. Additionally, he claimed that several countries are beginning to reduce their tariffs, which he believes the president and his team interpret as positive developments, even if there are some immediate repercussions.

“I hope they’re right,” Johnson concluded, expressing cautious optimism about the outcomes of this new trade strategy.
