Controversial Arrest of Wisconsin Judge Draws Criticism
Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) has expressed strong disapproval following the Trump administration’s recent arrest of a county judge in Wisconsin. The arrest of Judge Hannah Dugan is characterized by Baldwin as a “gravely serious and drastic move” that poses a significant threat to the established separation of powers within the U.S. government.
This situation arose after the FBI detained Judge Dugan on allegations that she obstructed immigration enforcement by helping an undocumented immigrant evade authorities. The judge is accused of guiding the immigrant out of her courtroom while federal agents were positioned nearby to apprehend him.
Baldwin stated, “Make no mistake, we do not have kings in this country and we are a democracy governed by laws that everyone must abide by. By relentlessly attacking the judicial system, flouting court orders and arresting a sitting judge, this president is putting those basic democratic values that Wisconsinites hold dear on the line.”
The senator further noted that while information regarding the specific case remains sparse, the incident fits into a troubling trend associated with the current administration’s approach to governance. Baldwin expressed her concern about what she perceives as a broader pattern of lawlessness undermining the judicial system and congressional oversight.
FBI Director Kash Patel took to social media to assert that Judge Dugan had actively misdirected federal agents away from the individual they intended to arrest, identified as Eduardo Flores Ruiz, thereby allowing him to evade capture.
Judge Dugan appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen Dries and is facing charges related to her alleged actions, specifically two felony counts for assisting the undocumented immigrant.
