Sen. Kevin Cramer Recovering After Concussion and Brain Bleed from Winter Accident
Senator Kevin Cramer, a Republican from North Dakota, is recuperating at home following a serious fall that resulted in a concussion and a brain bleed. The incident occurred during a recent trip back to his home state, where he slipped on ice while walking toward a dock.
In a statement shared through Facebook on Monday, Cramer detailed his experience: “While walking on the hill down to the dock, I stepped on ice and evidently fell hard, hitting the back of my head.” He went on to describe the disorienting effect of the fall, mentioning that he had no memory of the incident until he arrived at the Sanford Health emergency room alongside his wife, Kris Cramer.
According to Cramer, doctors conducted several tests, including a CT scan, which confirmed he suffered from “a severe concussion, a seizure, and a slight brain bleed.” He recounted the immediate medical attention he received for both his brain injury and a head laceration, saying, “The wound on my head wouldn’t stop oozing, so the doctor punched a couple of staples on the laceration and admitted me.”
As of Monday, Cramer reported feeling “better” despite experiencing persistent headaches. The 64-year-old senator indicated that his full recovery timeline remains uncertain, as he has been advised by medical professionals to rest for the time being. “It will be day to day this week, but I am ready to return quickly if events require it,” Cramer stated.
This recent injury is not the first health challenge for Cramer; in June 2022, he sustained a finger injury while attempting to move a heavy rock, which crushed his pinky and ring fingers. In the political sphere, Cramer secured re-election to the Senate in November 2022, defeating Democrat Katrina Christiansen. He first entered the Senate in 2018 after winning against former Senator Heidi Heitkamp, a Democrat from North Dakota.
