Senator Criticizes Mexican President, Declares Toxic Sewage Poses a Threat to ‘National Security’

FIRST ON FOX: Senator Tim Sheehy, a Republican from Montana, has issued a strong critique of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum concerning the substantial raw sewage and waste being discharged into the Tijuana River.

In his letter, Sheehy expresses deep concern for the well-being of local residents and warns that the ongoing toxic discharge poses potential risks to U.S. national security.

“The persistent pollution is causing illness among thousands of Americans each year, including elite military personnel such as U.S. Navy SEALs and Marine special forces who conduct training in contaminated waters,” the letter states. “A report from the Department of Defense’s Office of Inspector General in February 2025 indicated that, without intervention, Navy Special Warfare Command might need to cancel or relocate up to 75 percent of their water training exercises at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado due to elevated levels of bacterial contamination.”

Recent reports from the International Boundary and Water Commission reveal that as much as 5 million gallons of sewage are being released into the Tijuana River daily. This hazardous waste eventually enters the U.S. waterways and can reach the Pacific Ocean.

“For decades, Mexico’s practice of dumping waste into the waters where our elite servicemen train has resulted in health crises and undermined military readiness,” Sheehy stated. “The situation is deteriorating, and Mexico’s inaction is endangering both our troops and national security. Immediate remedial measures are essential.”

In addition to Sheehy’s comments, local officials have also reported that the Mexican government’s management of waste is creating hazardous environmental conditions for nearby communities.

“This sewage is more than just a nuisance — it poses serious health risks. It is filled with E. coli, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, arsenic, and a range of other hazardous substances,” pointed out San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond in a recent op-ed for Fox News. “Our water sources are contaminated, and our air is contaminated with toxic waste particles. Local residents are facing health issues ranging from skin infections to viral pharyngitis, and even pets have fallen ill after exposure.”

Next Tuesday, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin is scheduled to visit a local sanitation facility in San Diego to assess the detrimental impact of hazardous waste flowing into the U.S. from Mexico. A source close to Zeldin indicated that addressing this issue is a high priority for the Trump administration’s environmental agenda.

“We have been hearing alarming reports of Navy SEALs — some of our military’s most exceptional personnel — suffering health consequences from training in waters contaminated by Mexican sewage entering our country,” Zeldin told Fox on Friday. “This ongoing epidemic has become a public health crisis that has persisted for many years.”
