Senator Graham: “Putin May Be NATO’s ‘Man of the Year'”

During a recent appearance at the Munich Security Conference, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin has inadvertently bolstered NATO’s strength and unity more than the alliance’s own member states. Graham remarked that if there were to be an award for the “NATO Man of the Year,” it would rightly go to Putin.

Graham pointed out that NATO has seen an increase in membership with the addition of Finland and Sweden, alongside a commitment to increase defense spending. “He’s made a serious miscalculation,” Graham emphasized, highlighting the unintended consequences of Russia’s aggressive policies.

Moreover, Graham expressed his belief that any eventual peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine should include a provision for Ukraine to gain immediate NATO membership if Russia were to invade again. He conveyed this assertion by stating, “If he understood that if he does this again, Ukraine’s membership in NATO is a certainty, then that would serve as a deterrent.”

Senator Graham’s remarks were made in conjunction with other panelists, including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and fellow Senator Jeanne Shaheen, amid ongoing discussions regarding the future of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. This dialogue follows a controversial announcement from former President Donald Trump, raising concerns among European NATO allies about their inclusion in such pivotal negotiations.

In response to the sidelining of European nations in the peace discussions, NATO Secretary General Rutte encouraged them to actively participate in shaping the dialogue rather than merely voicing grievances. “Get into the debate, not by complaining, but by coming up with concrete ideas,” he urged attendees at the MSC.

Potential Minerals Agreement

Amid the backdrop of these discussions, the Trump administration is reportedly proposing that the U.S. would acquire a 50% ownership stake in Ukraine’s rare earth mineral reserves. This proposal could involve deploying American troops to safeguard these resources as part of a potential agreement with Russia to conclude the ongoing conflict, as noted by NBC News based on unnamed U.S. officials.

According to the same report, this ownership arrangement would serve as compensation for the extensive military aid provided to Ukraine throughout the war, rather than an outright purchase of the minerals. Senator Graham characterized this arrangement as a potential “game-changer” for Ukraine, stating that it could shift the narrative around U.S. support, portraying Ukraine as an asset rather than a burden to American interests.

He added, “This minerals agreement is a game changer, because President Trump can assure the American public that supporting Ukraine brings tangible benefits since they hold substantial mineral wealth.” Graham further cautioned against letting Russia appropriate Ukraine’s valuable resources, arguing that doing so would undermine efforts to stabilize the region.

In a show of unity, Graham urged European nations to rally behind this potential minerals deal, pointing out its strategic significance for both Ukraine and the West. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also indicated his openness to negotiating terms regarding the nation’s mineral resources in exchange for continued support from the United States.
