Serena Williams Steals the Show at Super Bowl Halftime
Serena Williams made a captivating entrance at the Super Bowl held on February 9, joining Kendrick Lamar on stage at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The tennis icon, aged 43, showcased her impressive crip-walking skills during Lamar’s halftime performance, celebrating a dance style that originated in the 1970s with the Los Angeles Crips.
In a lighthearted moment captured in a backstage video posted on X, Williams reflected on the experience, joking, “Man I did not crip-walk like that at Wimbledon. Oh, I would’ve been fined. It was all love.”
A nostalgic clip shared by Complex Sports on Instagram depicted Williams gracefully dancing to Tha Dogg Pound’s “Keep It Gangster.”
In the clip, Williams raised her hands in joy and swayed side to side, laughter illuminating her exuberance.
This isn’t the first time Williams’ dance moves have stirred discussion. Back in 2012, she faced scrutiny after she mimicked a crip walk post-victory against Maria Sharapova at the Olympics, leading to discussions surrounding the dance’s links to gang culture.
During a press conference following that event, when questioned about her dance, Williams responded firmly, “First of all, it was just a dance. I didn’t know that’s what it was called. Second, why are you asking me that? If anything, you should be trying to ask me questions to lift me up not bring such things … I’m done with that question,” as reported by The Guardian.
After her performance to Lamar’s track “Not Like Us” — a notable diss aimed at rapper Drake — Williams shared another video on Instagram, expressing her excitement for the moment with the caption: “Let’s go Super Bowl halftime??! I died a little! .”
This performance notably drew attention due to Williams’ past relationship with Drake, adding an intriguing layer to her presence at the event.
