Authorities have charged seven Chilean nationals believed to be involved in a series of high-profile burglaries targeting renowned athletes, including Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Joe Burrow. The alleged thefts resulted in the loss of over $2 million in various high-value items taken from the homes of these athletes.
This week, a federal criminal complaint was unsealed, identifying the accused members of a South American theft ring: Pablo Cartes, Ignacio Cartes, Bastian Freraut, Jordan Sanchez, Bastian Morales, Alexander Chavez, and Sergio Cabello.
The individuals face serious charges, including conspiracy to engage in interstate transportation of stolen property, with potential penalties reaching up to ten years in prison.
According to the court documents, the suspects carried out break-ins from October to December 2024, typically while the athletes were away competing in games. This brazen approach allowed them to target the homes of these prominent figures without fear of confrontation.
Details in the complaint highlight specific incidents, noting that both Mahomes’s and Kelce’s residences were burglarized in early October, coinciding with a game against the New Orleans Saints, during which significant items, including jewelry and cash, went missing.
On October 21, the suspects reportedly struck again, this time targeting a home belonging to a Tampa Bay Buccaneers player. The alleged theft included jewelry, a suitcase, and even a firearm.
The most notable crime from this spree occurred on November 2 at the home of Milwaukee Bucks player Bobby Portis, where the culprits allegedly made away with an impressive $1.484 million in valuables, while Portis was playing against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Additionally, it is reported that Burrow’s home was targeted on December 9, coinciding with the Cincinnati Bengals’ away game against the Dallas Cowboys. During this incident, approximately $300,000 worth of jewelry and bags were stolen.
The alleged crime spree concluded with a final burglary in late December at the residence of a Memphis Grizzlies player, which also saw approximately $1 million in goods stolen.
In a significant development, three of the accused were detained following a traffic stop in Ohio and now face additional charges for allegedly falsifying documents in connection with the federal investigation.
