Ahead of the highly anticipated finale of Severance‘s second season on Friday, Gold Derby has offered an analysis of the show’s prospects in the upcoming Emmy Awards, focusing on both the series and acting categories. Unfortunately, there’s no award for Best Goat, despite the show’s significant impact.
During its inaugural season in 2022, Severance secured 14 Emmy nominations and clinched two craft awards for its main title design and music composition. In that cycle, it faced stiff competition from Succession Season 3, which dominated by winning awards for Best Series, Writing, and a Supporting Actor award for Matthew Macfadyen, and Squid Game Season 1, which took home accolades for directing and acting, notably for Lee Jung-jae. Now, while Succession has concluded its run, Squid Game returns with its second season, though it has received a more tepid critical response this time around.
Last year, four members of the Severance cast were nominated: Adam Scott as Mark Scout in the lead actor category, Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel in supporting actress, and both John Turturro as Irving Bailiff and Christopher Walken as Burt Goodman in supporting actor. Additionally, the show received nominations for director Ben Stiller and writer Dan Erickson. Fast forward three years, and the Apple TV+ series about employees who dissociate their work memories from their personal lives stands on strong footing to garner major award wins.
Best Drama Series
Currently, Gold Derby’s latest Emmy odds favor Severance to win Best Drama Series, a competitive category that also includes The Last of Us, The White Lotus, Slow Horses, The Diplomat, The Pitt, Squid Game, and Andor. Should the predictions hold, it would mark a historic win as Apple’s first drama series victor, following two previous comedy wins for Ted Lasso in 2021 and 2022.

Best Drama Actor
This category appears to be a tight race between Adam Scott and Gary Oldman from Slow Horses. Seven out of ten Emmy experts predict Scott will take home the statue, indicating his strong position, whereas Oldman has garnered two predictions. For both actors, a win would be a career first.
Best Drama Actress
Britt Lower as Helly Riggs (aka Helena Eagan) is currently sitting in fourth place for the lead actress category, trailing behind frontrunners Kathy Bates (Matlock), Keri Russell (The Diplomat), and Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us). A nomination for Lower would be a well-deserved recognition, particularly after being overlooked during Season 1.
Best Drama Supporting Actress
In the supporting actress category, Arquette finds herself in fifth place behind Allison Janney (The Diplomat), Carrie Coon (The White Lotus), Kaitlyn Dever (The Last of Us), and Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus). Arquette, an Academy Award winner for Boyhood (2014), previously earned two Emmys for her roles in Medium (2005) and The Act (2019). Additionally, Dichen Lachman as Ms. Casey/Gemma Scout and Merritt Wever as Gretchen George are other potential nominees who could surprise in this category.
Best Drama Supporting Actor
John Turturro is currently favored to win, with nine out of ten Emmy experts predicting his victory, while the remaining expert is backing Jack Lowden from Slow Horses. Should Turturro win, it would mark his second Emmy Award after previously winning for guest acting in Monk in 2004. Also noteworthy is Christopher Walken, who could once again earn a nomination, while newcomers like Tramell Tillman as Seth Milchick and Zach Cherry as Dylan George may also make their mark.
