As temperatures rise, southern Ontario is bracing for potentially severe weather this afternoon, with conditions favorable for strong storms, according to Global News meteorologist Ross Hull.
“Today, temperatures are forecasted to soar into the mid to high 20s across southern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) as the region is positioned in the warm sector of a low-pressure system tracking northward,” Hull stated.
“Humidex values may approach 30, driven by the rising temperatures ahead of an approaching cold front. Strong southwesterly winds are also expected to accompany this warm air. This combination of heat and humidity could set the stage for significant storms as the cold front moves through the area,” he added.
Hull indicated that this atmospheric mix is likely to produce storms in the afternoon and evening hours on Tuesday.
“We will be monitoring the evolution of storms from this afternoon into the early evening, which may generate strong wind gusts across the GTA and parts of southern Ontario,” the meteorologist noted. “Some of these storms may also produce sizeable hail.”
“There is a possibility of an isolated tornado forming, especially in parts of eastern Ontario, due to the favorable atmospheric conditions,” Hull remarked.
Earlier on Tuesday, Hull mentioned that the extent of the storms’ intensity remains uncertain.
“The storms’ strength will largely hinge on the amount of sunlight different areas receive before the front arrives, which could provide additional energy to the atmosphere,” he explained.
He anticipates that the warm, pleasant weather residents are enjoying today will dissipate as they head into Wednesday.
“Following the passage of the cold front, temperatures are expected to plummet overnight into early Wednesday morning, with lows predicted in the low single digits,” Hull noted.
“Expect calmer weather on Wednesday with clearing skies; however, daytime highs will remain cooler than average, hovering around the low double digits,” he concluded.
