As summer approaches, revisiting the Sex and the City Season 2 episode titled “Twenty-Something Girls vs. Thirty-Something Women” might not evoke the breezy vacation vibes you expect.

In this iconic 1999 episode, the quartet—Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha—heads to the Hamptons for an idyllic August escape, but things take an awkward turn. From the unimpressive “sh*tty chic” cottage, as Samantha describes it, to Carrie unexpectedly encountering Mr. Big’s new girlfriend, Natasha, the weekend is filled with unanticipated challenges. Perhaps the most infamous twist, however, stems from Charlotte’s rather embarrassing experience with pubic lice, colloquially known as crabs.

A Trip Unravels

Charlotte contracts these unwelcome guests after a brief romantic encounter with a younger man, Greg, who mistakenly believes she is a year younger than she truly is.

Interestingly, Candace Bushnell, the original columnist for Sex and the City, shared her unique insights about the cringe-worthy moments in the episode during a recent appearance on Kristin Davis’ podcast, Are You a Charlotte?. She recounted how she drew inspiration for her writing by documenting her night outings in a notebook, often slipping away to jot down observations about those she met.

Bushnell noted that this particular storyline was rooted in a true story she had heard.

Real-Life Influence

During the podcast, Davis expressed disbelief over the bizarre and uncomfortable plot, asking, “That was real?” to which Bushnell confirmed. While the specific incident involving crabs was not a direct reflection of her life, she did admit to having once lied about her age, connecting her personal experiences with the character’s narrative. Eventually, she revealed that she had indeed encountered crabs after sharing living quarters with a roommate.

“They can be transferred via towels! No one tells you that,” Bushnell shared humorously.

Having worked in the writers’ room during the show’s formative years, Bushnell brought a relatable touch to the portrayals on Sex and the City. In this episode, when Charlotte realizes she has crabs, she goes to strip her sheets. Samantha remarks, “Well, there go our sh*tty sheets,” as they tumble from the balcony.

Later, Carrie recounts her own traumatic experience with crabs to a date, humorously stating, “I had them once in college, and the experience scarred me for life. I don’t think I can go back into that house until the mattresses are sanitized, and the sheets and towels are burned.”
