Shabana Azmi recently appeared on Indian Idol 15 to promote her Netflix show Dabba Cartel.
Shabana Azmi shared heartfelt memories of her father, the esteemed poet and lyricist Kaifi Azmi, during her recent appearance on the popular show Indian Idol 15. In addition to discussing her new web series, Dabba Cartel, Azmi reflected on her father’s dedication to his craft and the sacrifices he made for his art.
In her conversation, Azmi recounted an interesting anecdote about how filmmaker Chetan Anand sought her father’s unique talent to craft a screenplay written entirely in Urdu poetry. Anand was convinced that Kaifi Azmi was the only individual capable of realizing his vision. “Kaifi sahab would devote immense energy to his work for Anand. He often spent sleepless nights writing, balancing his health issues while under tremendous pressure,” she noted, revealing that this relentless commitment ultimately led to her father’s struggles with his health, including a paralysis attack.
Azmi reflected on the passion that drives artists, stating, “I often ponder how some artists become so engrossed in their ambitions that they ignore their well-being, focusing solely on their work.” Kaifi Azmi’s legacy is evident in the literary and cultural spheres, as his poignant lyrics for songs like “Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Situm” and “Jaane Kya Tuney Kahi” continue to resonate with audiences.
The web series Dabba Cartel, which Azmi is currently promoting, is set against the vibrant backdrop of Mumbai. It chronicles the lives of five middle-class women who run a tiffin delivery business. However, what starts as a straightforward entrepreneurial endeavor descends into the dark world of drug trafficking. The series is helmed by director Hitesh Bhatia.
Dabba Cartel features a talented ensemble cast, including Nimisha Sajayan, Shalini Pandey, Jyothika, Anjali Anand, Sai Tamhankar, Jisshu Sengupta, and Lillete Dubey. The show’s trailer hints at themes of “ambition, grit, and resourcefulness,” suggesting viewers can expect unexpected twists and turns. The narrative is crafted by writers Vishnu Menon and Bhavna Kher, with production by Excel Entertainment and contributions from creators Shibani Akhtar, Vishnu Menon, Gaurav Kapur, and Akanksha Seda. Released on February 28, Dabba Cartel has generated considerable attention.
Initial reviews for the series have been largely favorable, with critics commending the powerful performances of the cast as well as the gripping storytelling and screenplay.
