Shabana Azmi Praises Netflix’s Dabba Cartel and Highlights Progress in Women’s Representation in Film
Shabana Azmi’s recent performance in Netflix’s Dabba Cartel has garnered significant acclaim, with many praising her ability to adapt and shine in contemporary cinema.
As an astute observer of the shifts in Hindi cinema, Azmi reflected on the improving conditions for female actors compared to previous decades. She pointed to younger talent such as Alia Bhatt, who have defied traditional barriers by continuing their careers after marriage and motherhood.
Azmi noted that historically, marriage often signaled the end of a woman’s film career in Bollywood. She stated, “In the past, women’s careers had a notably short span. It was once unimaginable for an actress to return to acting after marriage and children. However, artists like Alia Bhatt have shattered that stereotype. The landscape is evolving, and it’s encouraging to see more opportunities arising for senior female actors, leveraging their vast experience,” she shared with India Today.
The renowned actress also addressed the significant impact of the rise of digital platforms on the industry, acknowledging a division in content between streaming services and traditional cinema. Azmi expressed her thoughts on the ongoing transformation, stating, “We are indeed in a transitional phase. The advent of OTT platforms is revolutionizing how we consume content, but it has also led to diminished box office revenues, as audiences often prefer to wait for films to become available for streaming.”
Throughout her career, Azmi has emphasized the importance of strong narratives, asserting that dialogue loses its significance without a compelling story. She recalled advice from her husband, Javed Akhtar, saying, “Javed once told me, ‘It’s fine to innovate how a story is told, but you must first have a solid story to tell. It’s akin to decorating a house without ensuring the structural pillars are sound. How can you enjoy the decoration if the foundation is flawed?'”
Now at 74, Shabana Azmi continues to challenge herself with diverse roles. In 2023, she made headlines for her bold scene with Dharmendra in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, and her recent portrayal of Sheila in Dabba Cartel has been met with enthusiasm from audiences.
In an industry that is gradually evolving, Azmi’s insights offer a perspective on not just the challenges but also the opportunities that lay ahead for female actors in Indian cinema.
