Renu Chopra Details Shah Rukh Khan’s Unwavering Support for Her Son’s Film Ittefaq
Renu Chopra has recently shared an inspiring story about how Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan supported her son, Abhay Chopra, in the making of the film ‘Ittefaq’ without even reading the script.
Renu Chopra, widow of the late filmmaker Ravi Chopra, expressed her gratitude towards Shah Rukh Khan for his remarkable generosity, revealing that he backed Abhay’s film entirely trusting him. The 2017 thriller, which was both directed and co-written by Abhay Chopra, featured actors Akshaye Khanna, Sidharth Malhotra, and Sonakshi Sinha. Renu noted that SRK even declined to charge interest on the financial support, stating that it would be ‘haraam’.
In her conversation with Pinkvilla, Renu reflected on the support she received from various people, emphasizing Shah Rukh Khan’s involvement. She recounted, “Shah Rukh had only made guest appearances for us before this. When it came to making ‘Ittefaq’, I decided to reach out to him. Our offices share a wall, so it felt like the right step.” Renu humorously shared her exchange with Khan, recalling, “I asked him, ‘Should I come over?’ and he insisted, ‘No, no. You won’t come, Renu ji, I will come.’ He showed such respect, calling me senior in the industry.”
Renu described how warmly Shah Rukh welcomed them during their meeting. “He made me sit down and asked what I needed. I expressed my financial constraints, to which he readily offered his support. I assured him that my children would dedicate themselves fully to the project. It was important as it marked my younger son’s debut,” she noted, adding that SRK agreed to back the film without hesitations about the script. His philosophy was simple: he preferred to support the people he believed in rather than just the project itself.
Highlighting Shah Rukh’s ongoing generosity, Renu stated that their financial arrangement was equitable, but she noted SRK’s principle regarding financial ethics. “As we completed the film and dealt with finances, he reiterated that charging interest was not something he could accept, saying, ‘Nahi, ye haraam hai mere liye. Main nahi lunga’,” she shared, affirming the kindness she has encountered in the industry.
‘Ittefaq’ hit theaters in November 2017 and was well-received, achieving commercial success and garnering favorable reviews from audiences and critics alike.
