The individual suspected of driving into a crowded New Year’s celebration in New Orleans, resulting in at least 15 fatalities and numerous injuries, has been named as Shamsud Din Jabbar, according to the FBI.

Jabbar, who died at the scene, was a U.S. citizen residing in Texas, as confirmed by FBI Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Alethea Duncan during a press briefing.

Jabbar had experienced multiple marital challenges; his first marriage to Nakedra Charrlle ended in divorce in 2012, and his second marriage concluded in 2022, as reported by The New York Times. The couple had two children, and court filings indicate that Jabbar had fallen behind on child support payments.

Army Service:

In a statement, the FBI disclosed that Jabbar was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Assistant Special Agent Duncan mentioned, “The individual was an Army veteran, and we believe he received an honorable discharge. We’re currently working on gathering more details about his background.”

Jabbar served from March 2007 to January 2015 as a Human Resource Specialist and later as an Information Technology Specialist. After his active duty, he remained in the Army Reserves until July 2020.

His military service included a deployment to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010. Jabbar earned multiple commendations during his military career, including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Other accolades included the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, and several other service-related awards. Notably, records show that Jabbar first attempted to join the Navy but was discharged shortly afterward, precluding him from training.

“According to our records, a Shamsuddin Bahar Jabbar enlisted on August 12, 2004, in the Navy but was released from the Delayed Entry Program a month later without proceeding to basic training,” a spokesperson for the U.S. Navy stated.

Authorities are currently investigating the scene on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, where Jabbar allegedly drove a rented pickup truck through a crowd of New Year’s celebrants before exiting the vehicle and firing at police before being shot dead by law enforcement. OFFICIALS POSTPONE SUGAR BOWL IN THE WAKE OF APPARENT TERROR ATTACK ON BOURBON STREET

This New Orleans attack follows the tragic Christmas market incident in Germany, which resulted in five deaths and over 200 injuries. That incident was also categorized as a terrorist attack.

The Magdeburg Police indicated that a 50-year-old Saudi doctor was considered a “lone perpetrator” in the German incident, suggesting a potential pattern of isolated attacks.

The FBI and the Texas Department of Corrections have been contacted for further comments regarding this ongoing investigation.
