‘I Might Choke You in Public’

Shannon Sharpe is facing renewed scrutiny following the release of an audio recording by the attorney representing his accuser. The recording allegedly features the former NFL star making a threat to choke the woman in public, sparking intense media attention and legal implications. However, Sharpe’s legal representatives assert that the audio has been misinterpreted and does not reflect a genuine threat.
Attorney Tony Buzbee shared the recording on Wednesday morning, labeling Sharpe’s previous comments aimed at him and his client—referred to as “Jane Doe”—as misguided. Buzbee stated that this audio “provides a fair picture of the relationship shortly before the alleged assault,” but he has not disclosed the date of the recording.
The audio begins with what appears to be a phone conversation, where the accuser inquires about Sharpe’s plans to visit Los Angeles. Sharpe confirms he will be in town, leading the woman to question why he, a man in his mid-50s, would want to go out. The tone then shifts as Sharpe makes a concerning remark about choking her, saying, “I might choke you in public … big Black guy chokes small white woman.”
The woman responds that such a statement “is not a good look,” prompting a back-and-forth that ends with Sharpe challenging her with the question, “Well, what?”
Sharpe’s legal team argues that discussions of this nature were typical in their past interactions and insist they do not suggest any serious threats of violence. They reference a message allegedly sent by the accuser in October 2023, where she appears to request that Sharpe “put a dog collar around my neck and choke me with it while ur f***ing me.”
A representative for Sharpe emphasized that the newly released audio is a brief excerpt lacking essential context regarding the relationship dynamics between the two individuals.
In a significant legal development, Doe has filed a lawsuit against Sharpe asserting that he raped her during late 2024 and early 2025, occurring after she attempted to terminate their nearly two-year relationship amidst allegations of infidelity.
In response to the allegations, Sharpe has indicated plans to file a defamation lawsuit against his accuser. His attorney, Lanny J. Davis, conducted a press conference asserting Sharpe’s innocence and shared several text messages that purportedly reflect the accuser’s interest in role-playing and other unconventional sexual dynamics. Davis asserted that these messages highlight a change in behavior once Sharpe declined to have a child with her.
