[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Ghosts Season 4, Episode 20 “I Know What You Did Thirty-Seven Summers Ago.”]

The latest episode of Ghosts, titled “I Know What You Did Thirty-Seven Summers Ago,” marks a unique celebration of 4/20, showcasing the character Flower (played by Sheila Carrasco) in a refreshing holiday-themed narrative. The episode is particularly significant as it is the 20th in the fourth season.

The storyline primarily focuses on Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay’s (Utkarsh Ambudkar) efforts to impress Mayor Tad (Justin Kirk), who is connected to a tragic past involving the character Stephanie (Odessa A’Zion), marked by her untimely death during her prom night. As Sam wrestles with the conflicting stories surrounding Tad’s actions on that fateful night, tensions rise. It is revealed that Stephanie harbored resentment towards Tad for years, believing he abandoned her. This misunderstanding culminates in a dramatic confrontation when Sam accuses him of leaving Stephanie behind. However, once Stephanie admits her deception, it becomes evident that Tad had indeed moved on, marrying her former best friend and naming their daughter after her, facilitating a resolution that allows Sam and Jay to mend fences with the mayor and secure the necessary event permit.

In a parallel narrative, Jay addresses concerns regarding his employee Gabe’s (Dustin Ybarra) marijuana use, coinciding with the cultural significance of April 20th for cannabis enthusiasts. As concerns escalate about Gabe sabotaging their festivities, the spirit Pete (Richie Moriarty) takes it upon himself to monitor Gabe’s behavior. This leads to an unexpected hot-boxing experience in a vehicle, during which Pete inadvertently gets a contact high—a revelation that showcases the humor and laid-back vibe of the episode.

Flower plays a pivotal role in convincing Pete to embrace the experience, encouraging him to go with the flow. The dynamics between characters shift, as Pete’s newfound state of relaxation allows him to exhibit undeniable chemistry with Alberta (Danielle Pinnock), resulting in a comedic yet sweet encounter, albeit with an awkward twist.

Below, Sheila Carrasco shares insights on Flower’s role in the episode celebrating 4/20, the impact on other characters, and what the future may hold for them as Season 4 progresses.

How did you feel when you discovered Ghosts was planning a 4/20 episode?

Sheila Carrasco: I think the cast was pleasantly surprised. It’s not a typical theme for episodic television, especially on a network like CBS. Flower is such a fitting character for this day, and I was thrilled to see how Richie Moriarty would portray a high Pete since he’s incredibly talented and brings so much versatility. His performance added an authentic touch to the experience.

Do you see potential for more escapades with Gabe now that he’s embraced this lifestyle?

Definitely. It’s an ongoing topic of discussion among us on set, particularly with the dynamics between Flower and Gabe. Having someone who shares a similar vibe on the property opens up new avenues for comedy and storytelling. Gabe’s daily celebrations of 4/20 align perfectly with Flower’s character, creating a playful and engaging atmosphere. Dustin Ybarra is wonderful to work with, and there’s ample opportunity for comedic interactions ahead.

If Flower were to pass through Gabe, do you think it might be overwhelming for him?

Bertrand Calmeau / CBS

That’s a real possibility. Flower’s essence is more complex than just a casual stoner; there are layers to her character that could lead to interesting outcomes if she walked through him. It could certainly create some mind-blowing moments!

What was it like to support Pete during this pivotal moment in his spirit life?

For Flower, the joy of seeing others enjoy themselves is paramount. She wishes to share good experiences, and while she may not realize how overwhelming being high can be for some, her encouragement aims to soothe Pete’s anxieties. She recognizes the opportunity to help him find balance and allow him to experience something unique, and it’s a chance for her to introduce other ghosts to a different side of life, which they might typically shy away from.

Flower’s encouragement leads to a moment between Pete and Alberta. How would she feel about facilitating that?

Flower would be thrilled! It reflects her desire for everyone to grow closer and bond as a community. She might be surprised at the pairing but ultimately supportive of their connection. It’s amusing to think of Pete’s ‘bad boy’ persona sparking interest in Alberta.

Does Flower ever feel disappointment that she can’t partake in the high herself?

Flower seems content with her state as a spirit. She might not be focused on getting higher since she experienced life at its peak before passing. However, there could be a lingering concern about maintaining clarity in her existence. As she navigates her world, Flower’s journey will likely involve remembering her past while striving to grow alongside her ghostly housemates.

Ghosts, Season 4, Thursdays, 8:30/7:30c, CBS
