Sheryl Crow Sells Tesla, Donates Proceeds to NPR

Sheryl Crow has made headlines by parting ways with her Tesla, a decision she publicly shared on social media. In a post on Instagram, Crow indicated that she sold the vehicle and directed the proceeds to NPR, a move intended as a stand against what she perceives to be threats to journalistic integrity.

Accompanying a video of her Tesla being driven away, Crow reflected on the influence of associations, stating, “My parents always said … you are who you hang out with. There comes a time when you have to decide who you are willing to align with. So long Tesla.” This statement highlights her desire to distance herself from what she views as troubling affiliations.

Crow elaborated further, emphasizing the importance of supporting media that remains free from political pressures. “Money donated to @npr, which is under threat by President Musk, in hopes that the truth will continue to find its way to those willing to know the truth,” she stated, adding the hashtag #ProtectTheConstitution, which underscores her commitment to freedom of the press.

Her actions come amidst a larger backdrop of political tension. Recent actions by the U.S. government have seen thousands of federal employees being let go, a situation reportedly encouraged by Musk’s influence. Although NPR is not heavily reliant on federal government funding, its member stations, many of which are affiliated with universities, receive various levels of support from public funds.

The scrutiny surrounding Musk has intensified following his increased access to the White House since the beginning of Donald Trump’s second term. Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin has been vocal in his criticism, labeling Musk a “wrecking ball of right-wing authoritarianism.” Raskin expressed concern about Musk’s influence, describing him as an “unelected bureaucrat and aspiring techno-dictator” seeking to establish a new order where he holds significant power, while others would find their autonomy diminished.

In a coordinated effort to counter the perceived overreach of the Trump Administration, Raskin has taken active steps by co-chairing a task force alongside House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other prominent lawmakers. Together, they aim to address the potential ramifications of the administration’s policies, particularly those associated with cryptocurrency and digital governance.

Last week, Raskin criticized Musk further on X, formerly known as Twitter, claiming that while Musk cannot constitutionally ascend to the presidency, he essentially acquired influence equivalent to presidential power through financial means. “Of course, Musk could not be elected president constitutionally, so Trump just sold him the office for $280 million,” he remarked, sharing a related image that drew attention to the ongoing discourse surrounding power dynamics in the current political landscape.

Crow’s decision to sell her Tesla and donate the proceeds marks a distinctive stance, aligning her personal choices with her values around media freedom and political accountability. Her move resonates amidst a vast conversation about the intersection of celebrity influence, political engagement, and the role of media in shaping public discourse.
